Added back places of interest

[edit]

From Towns_of_Howrah page. Removed places where there are no tourist attractions and the places which are far from Howrah City. Towns_of_Howrah page should be removed now. —Preceding unsigned comment added by GDibyendu (talkcontribs) 17:01, 4 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

I've removed http://thehowrahhotel.com as it links to a commercial site (hotel). --Victor 20:38, 24 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I removed the whole section (as an anon). You can't mention only one hotel and still be NPOV! Potatoswatter 22:00, 26 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Articles Haora and Howrah

[edit]

This is quite ridiculous. Haora and Howrah (হাওড়া in Bengali) is the SAME place! What is the point in having two articles if you can just COMBINE them! Has anyone thought of this?

__________________________________________

"Note: In Bengali there is no V or W; both are replaced with a hard "B" or "Bh" - Very Well is pronounced "Bherry Bhell" by most Bengalis. Hence the name Shibpur and not Shivpur."

This is a shame, shibpur is the name of the place as they pronounce it, not because of any etymological issue. And furthermore what the writer means by saying bengali has no "v" or "W" ? does he/she mean the Germanic alphabets ? or the exact sound pronounced by some group of people at some place ? if it is the second then which place ? Does it mean that in Bengali one does not have the German W thats why shibpur is called shibpur otherwise it would have been called abraca-dabra. Or should we mention that if Dutch did not have the corresponding sound h unlike French it would have been called olland ? Its highly stereotyped and presumptuous on the part of the writer to write such claims which ofcourse has no basis. Jeroje 05:40, 22 January 2007 (UTC)jeroje[reply]

Note

[edit]

Please do not add any more institutes in the list, if the institute is required to be listed then make a List of institutions from Howrah and add a link in the article. Jeroje (talk) 07:49, 12 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I have just added archive links to 2 external links on Howrah. Please take a moment to review my edit. If necessary, add {{cbignore}} after the link to keep me from modifying it. Alternatively, you can add {{nobots|deny=InternetArchiveBot}} to keep me off the page altogether. I made the following changes:

General clean-up needed again

[edit]

To all interested. The article needs another general clean-up to prevent it looking like an unstructured article, or a tourist article. The Neighbourhoods and places of interest section looks like an advertisement, and the Education section strikes me as similar. The Renovation of Writers' Buildings and shift of the State Secretariat section needs to be merged with either the history section, or the writer's building main article. - Master Of Ninja (talk) 11:18, 16 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Recent changes 2019-03-26

[edit]

Dear all. I wanted to discuss the recent changes to the Howrah article - most recently seen on this revision [1] - however has been inserted and revised multiple times over the past few days. The most recent edits are by User:Bubun khanra, however I wonder if they were doing these edits from an anonymous IP address previously. I feel these edits are being done in good faith. I have a few issues with these edits, which I explained on my last reversion, which have been ignored. Listing them as follows:

  • (1) The edits are breaking the structure of the wikipedia article. Non-existent citations are created, and pre-existing citations are now broken. These include the footnotes. The tables are now broken.
  • (2) The new information added is unreferenced
  • (3) As pointed out the information added refers to Howrah district, not the city/town of Howrah (i.e. the article). Howrah district has its own article. I suspect that the editor knows this as the information seems to be cut and pasted from Howrah district, however only in text form i.e. not the wiki markup which would include proper references.
  • (4) The transport section was culled with only the relevant information to Howrah a long time ago. I feel that further transport edits are more suitable for Wikivoyage rather than Wikipedia - articles are not travel guides on Wikipedia. A few years ago there was an instance of an article created with all the bus routes in Howrah which was deleted by the administrators for this exact reason.
  • (5) The transport section additions sometimes copy old sections and duplicate them. This is not a good structure for this article.

I do not want to get into an edit war or break the 3 revert rule on this. As I have only done one revert, I can do a 2nd revert linking to this explanation. However I will get some advice from User:Dirkbb who did a previous revert, as well as from Wikipedia:Dispute resolution and Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Edit warring. I think we can discuss this first and come to a conclusion. I am more than happy to discuss this, which is why I have put this into the talk page. - Master Of Ninja (talk) 08:28, 26 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Area of Howrah City

[edit]

Howrah Corporation & Bally Municipality are merged now. Previously Howrah Corporation contained 50 wards and so the area was 51.74 sq km (reference no 2). Bally Municipality's area was 11.81 sq km (reference no 3). We can add these two figures and find the total area of Howrah City (a part of Kolkata Metropolitan area / Greater Kolkata ) or Howrah Corporation (now). So it is 63.55 sq km. Now someone can say Bally is not within Howrah City. Then I can say Behala, Jadavpur & Joka are not in Kolkata City because Behala & Jadavpur were added to KMC in 80's period and Joka is added to KMC very recently. Previously they were all individual municipalities / mauza in South 24 Parganas. The part of Howrah district, which is under Greater Kolkata region, is actually called Howrah City. So Howrah City & Howrah Corporation's area is equivalent. Soumo Dutt 18:15, 20 July 2019 (UTC)
