Requested move 25 August 2021[edit]

The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. The result of the move request was: (non-admin closure) NO CONSENSUS User:力 (power~enwiki, π, ν) 19:44, 23 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

There are pages using both "in Solomon Islands" and "in the Solomon Islands". Any re-nomination should be a bulk proposal. The votes lean towards "in Solomon Islands", but a new discussion would be needed to move pages such as Geography of the Solomon Islands. Human rights in Solomon IslandsHuman rights in the Solomon Islands – The Solomon Islands always has a "the" in front of the name. • Sorry about the long comment; this is my attempt to collect the past debate scattered across a variety of pages. The most extensive discussions are:

Other moves have been undiscussed, including most of the moves that resulted in the current titles (without "the"), but the current titles are reasonably stable. My reading of past discussions is that there has not been a clear consensus overall so far. I would frame the issue as: 1. To what extent is one name or the other the WP:COMMONNAME? 2. to what extent does English in the country have a WP:ENGVAR preference for one name or the other? 3. (If both policies are applicable) how should they be weighed? Others are of course free to frame it differently.
As for my own view, I lean oppose. My assessment, at least from browsing https://www.solomontimes.com/ and https://www.solomonstarnews.com/ and from reading prior discussions, is that there is a strong preference for omitting "the" in Solomon Islands English for the name of the country (but, I must add, not an *exclusive* preference), and that it's reasonable to construe this as a matter of WP:ENGVAR. As for WP:COMMONNAME, including "the" is generally more common. On the other hand, WP:COMMONNAME makes an explicit allowance for WP:ENGVAR considerations. On balance I would keep the title without "the". Adumbrativus (talk) 08:48, 27 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
