Rewrite

[edit]

I've started a rewrite to give proper coverage to a man who was of great importance regionally before, during and after the Civil War. This will take some time. I am aware that I am introducing more background material, particularly on other actors in the drama, than is strictly warranted by an article on Mackworth. I am intending to move some of this to separate articles, particularly on Studley and the Chidleys in due course. Meanwhile, it is hard to make sense of Mackworth's participation without it, so I'd appreciate it if editors don't excise it. Sjwells53 (talk) 11:29, 25 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I've essentially finished the rewrite and will return to it only when I have a family tree to add, or links to make. I intend to follow up some other family members, as well as Puritan and Leveller figures linked from here.Sjwells53 (talk) 10:42, 14 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Title?

[edit]

Meanwhile, I would like raise the question of the title of the article. "Parliamentarian" is very ambiguous, even for people with a fair knowledge of the period. It can mean a supporter of Parliament during the Civil War or simply a Member of Parliament - sometimes used to indicate a distinguished and long-serving member. Mackworth was an MP for only a very short time and he supported the army in the latter phases of the Civil War, when it was at loggerheads with Parliament. Moreover, he had a son and a grandson, both with the same name, who both had considerably more parliamentary experience than he did. The grandson already has a reasonable article and I will be adding one on the son. So we can't just have elder and younger, because there will soon be three. The problem is important because Humphrey Mackworth articles can only increase in number. There's not just the missing son: the other branches of the family also liked the name Humphrey. My own preference would be to distinguish them simply with lifespan dates and provide a disambiguation page for those who search for the bare name. Ideas please!
