Please don't remove fan fiction from this page. Felix 16:33, 18 July 2006

Okay, but this time you don't mean fan fiction since those characters are actually canon. — Dunc| 21:54, 18 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Please don't block me for adding the in fiction line on this page. Felix 10:42, 7 August 2006

References / Literature[edit]

May be better to change the References heading to a Literature heading, since it contains works that are relevant, but which are uncited in the WP article. This is somewhat complicated by the existing use of a Notes heading to contain the references.Stringybark (talk) 05:35, 27 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

WP is inconsistent her, although there is some guidance (incomplete, unread and rarely followed) under WP:MOS at MOS:LAYOUT. "References" should be the works on which the article was written. "Further reading" items are other works that readers might like to look at beyond the scope of the article. This is somewhat complicated by WP:IMPERFECT and the fact that this article doesn't currently make use of inlined citations to these references (many older articles don't). Yet they're still the sources needed for this article scope, rather the supplemental works.
The internal references are usually (in a developed article) listed as Notes, References and Bibliography, followed by Further reading.
  • Notes – internal parenthetical footnotes, i.e. editor-created footnotes. Note that these may have citations embedded in them too.
  • References – actually citations (the auto-generated list of citations within the article). Our usual practice for short articles is to inline the references too, as part of the first citation to each one.
  • Bibliography – in articles with a long citation list, it's common for the references, or at least the references to major texts, to be extracted to a per-work bibliography. This is just a style point to make the citation list easier to find, and it easier to find the one copy of the ISBN or DOI for a textbook cited repeatedly by name. If there are no citations (as here) then they (as you suggest) are best placed here.
  • Further reading – This should suggest texts for study beyond this article. There could be some overlap with those already cited, but it wouldn't be a good idea to duplicate entries from a Bibliography.
As we seem to be in agreement here, I've renamed the headings. Andy Dingley (talk) 10:57, 27 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Please note that at WP:FNNR the term "Bibliography" is not encouraged, since it could be taken to mean "this is a list of books written by the subject of this article". This is more relevant to a biography than to an article about a class of locomotive, but I try to avoid "Bibliography" and stick to "References". --Redrose64 (talk) 16:29, 27 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
When Thomas the Tank Engine starts to publish his autobiography, I'll rename it. Andy Dingley (talk) 21:51, 28 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Fiction / Thomas the Tank Engine photo[edit]

Just for sake of completeness, could anyone aware of the facts just add a note under the Fiction heading that can explain the presence of the Thomas the Tank Engine photo in this article.Stringybark (talk) 21:11, 28 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

"Replicas" might be better as a broad title. There's one or more Thomas, a tender engine from Awdry and even a broad gauge loco. Andy Dingley (talk) 21:52, 28 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
