"In Brazil, episiotomy is the only surgery that can be done without the patient's consent or even knowledge, and the practice of te Husband Stitch is considered to be very common[1] . According to research, episiotomy is done in 53% of labours[2]. The right wing newspaper Estado de São Paulo has published numerous reports of women who suffered with this practice and with the Husband Stitch[3]. The routine practice of episiotomy and the subsequent stitching have been discussed in the media, specially after celebrities have come out to express how it affected their lives, like tv personality Bela Gil. [2]"
