Oldest covered bridge in the United States

[edit]

According to the book, "New England's Covered Bridges" by Benjamin and June Evans, the Hassenplug Bridge in Union County, Pennsylvania, is the oldest covered bridge in the United States having been built in 1825. The Hyde Hall Bridge is also listed with an 1825 construction date in the "World Guide to Covered Bridges" and its entries of both the National Register of Historic Places and the Historic American Engineering Record. The Historic American Buildings Survey entry for it shows an 1830 erection date. The New York Covered Bridge Society's web site lists both 1823 and 1825, but their picture of the sign at the bridge shows 1825. Various other web sites state 1823, but I cannot find any that reference a primary source. Waz8 (talk) 04:28, 16 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
