Update needed[edit]

{{update}} The aricle is in need of an update, especially the information about area & population. The article's information has been outdated as a result of reformation of the city & the formation of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation which has officially extended the city's limits & increased its population. --Doc sameer 20:42, 23 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Population of Hyderabad[edit]

Just a point to raise, that Hyderabad is not the 5th largest metropolis in India, it is actually the 6th behind Bangalore which is the 5th largest. The link to the largest metropolitan areas of the world lists Hyderabad as the 40th largest metropolis in the world and Bangalore 37th largest in the world. I am going to fix this discrepancy. Nitnaga211.31.206.61 08:24, 29 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hyderabad 5th largest city[edit]

I would however disagree with the statment made by the earlier author in this case. The citation given refering to Hyderabad as 6th largest city is based on population but not by area. The fact that Hyderabad comes after chennai in reference to area in square kms, can be checked with any Indian governmental organisation dealing geographyical aspects . This fact has always been mislead because of the edge Banglore city has as a software hub. In reference with population too, recent census data however state's that Hyderabad's population has already crossed that of Bangalore's.I kindly request that the authenticity of this fact be quoted based on a citation from Indian governmental organization, rather than a non -indian to obviate any ambiguity here in.

The discrepancy has already been corrected by me.

[ [User:Purush] [2:13PM, 16 November 2006]

In relation to the population issue, I have noticed in the intro to the page the population for Hyderabad is stated as 81 lakh, 8.1million but the cited reference gives an estimate for Hyderabad in 2007 a population of 6.1 million or 61 lakh. I will go ahead correct this discrepancy if no one has any objections.

The French Page[edit]

Hi, have a look at this. http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyder%C3%A2b%C3%A2d_%28Inde%29 The only listing on Hyderabad in the French Wikipedia seems to be that on the former kingdom. From the look, it does not seem to be NPOV. can any one knowledgeable in French go and edit it.

Removed Consulate general of IRAN section[edit]

I removed the section below: Too unimportant for the entry on this city. Maybe a page a Counsulates of Iran could be opened??

Consulate general of IRAN
Since the city of Hyderabad has been one of the centers of attraction for Iranians and since old days a noticeable number of Iranian has been settling in this city in 1970 the government of IRAN decided to have a new representative in this city, Count out its embassy in New Delhi and consulate general in Mumbai, In order to offer better service to Iranians who settled in Hyderabad and Deccan. This consulate has been located in the area of Banjara Hills (High class area of this city)

about maps and fabcity[edit]

I'm removing the link above from external links... there is a geolinks template directly above this link which makes this link redundant.

Fabcity is already referenced. --hydkat 07:46, 3 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I have created a mapping service specific to Hyderabad which makes perfect sense unlike wikimapia where people submit crap and the links in the existing geolinks have you tried globalguide? how far it is justified to map the city properly just checkout where the links on the right saying shamshabad point to? show me a service currently online which maps localities in Hyderabad to relevant coordinates. Many people have found my implementation useful in terms of information and code so I dont see a point in removing the link which is non commercial and only service which properly tries to map the city. I also like to mention that soon will be creating a geocoding webservice specific to Hyderabad. Please note that this is a contribution I made for my city and I dont benefit from it. Its a service.

Requested move[edit]

Hyderabad, IndiaHyderabad (India) — User Tobias Conradi recently moved the page from Hyderabad (India) to its old name Hyderabad, India citing Wikipedia:Naming conventions (city names) which redirects to Wikipedia:Naming conventions (settlements) where the subsection India uses Hyderabad (India) as an example of the correct naming style for its case! Note that he has created a disambig page out of Hyderabad (India) taking elements that already exist in the Hyderabad disambig page. -- hydkat 13:42, 28 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Survey[edit]

Add  * '''Support'''  or  * '''Oppose'''  on a new line followed by a brief explanation, then sign your opinion using ~~~~.

Your point makes sense, but we are disambiguating between two places from different countries. If it were simply a district or state I'd agree. Braces makes a lot more sense here. Otherwise it seems as if we are saying that the two Hyderabad cities fall in the districts of India and Pakistan!!! --hydkat 13:35, 29 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose - I had a discussion earlier with Tobias regarding this. I had given it a lot of thought and changed my mind. It would be nice for everyone on Wikipedia to follow a single convention. WP:NC:CITY states that X, Y is the currently the most used method for geography-related articles. If we follow the global convention, then there would less confusion I think. I am currently using the comma format across the board, for districts, towns, villages, taluks etc. -- Ganeshk (talk) 18:31, 28 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Plz read my above comment. Can Y in X, Y be the name of a country, when it is usually a state or district? --hydkat 13:35, 29 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yes it can. This is currently applied to WP articles worldwide (except some Nichalp & Co. moved pages in India and Pakistan). Read WP:NC:CITY Tobias Conradi (Talk) 15:39, 29 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hydkat, I don't see why Y should mean a district or a state, it could mean a country too. What's happening because of using paranthesis in some names is that it is spreading to other city articles where comma should be used. If we follow comma everywhere, this kind of thing will not happen. -- Ganeshk (talk) 16:35, 29 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
In the point of view of an editor; yes that is a potential problem. But in the point of view of an article browser there's quite a difference between saying Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh and Hyderabad, India, it just sounds absurd. Especially if it is in a list like List of cities in India --hydkat 17:17, 29 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The list that you point should not be showing dab names. It should show [[Hyderabad, India|Hyderabad]]. The reader would notice no difference. -- Ganeshk (talk) 17:22, 29 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support This move is backwards. The original name name that seemed to have been accepted by the regular editors is "Hyderabad (India)". The recent move to "Hyderabad, India" without discussion should be immediately reversed. --Polaron | Talk 14:41, 29 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
what do you mean by backwards? Do you want to develop WP backward as opposed to the majority of editors here? I don't know what the original name was, but if you have a badly named article you should not stick to the original bad name. Tobias Conradi (Talk) 15:35, 29 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Note that most encyclopedias disambiguate using parentheses. Why should articles about cities be different. By backwards, I meant that you moved it without discussion so it should be moved back first, then you can propose a move to your preferred style. While it may have been moved by another user before you did, there were no complaints until your move. --Polaron | Talk 15:40, 29 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
"most encyclopedias disambiguate using parentheses" - WP does not so for settlements, read the policy WP:NC:CITY. I need to propose a move while the move in the other direction by Nichalp does not need to be proposed? The article was violating WP:NC:CITY. Change WP:NC:CITY if you like settlements in India to be treated different to all other settlements around the world. I would vote against this, if you propose it, because I prefer consisteny. Tobias Conradi (Talk) 15:46, 29 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Nothing violates WP:NC:CITY. The move was proposed and put into effect there itself. You started to move your own styles without discussion. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 12.147.22.210 (talk) 12:26, 30 October 2006
Even discounting the India entry, the guideline says there are several disambiguation styles with the comma currently the most commonly used. Using parentheses is listed as an option so it is not against the guideline. This is a matter of preference. In fact, there have been many city articles using parentheses before you changed them yourself. --Polaron | Talk 15:52, 29 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose. Keep it simple and follow the most-used city format. Gene Nygaard 05:53, 30 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Err.. You're mentioning a popular city format that is used by American media agencies to classify non-US cities. That goes against the grain of having localized flavors of naming conventions. Tobias, there is nothing wrong about it. You move pages according to your conventions when the parenthesis is a perfectly legal method of disambiguating. Wikipedia follows local standards, when necessary, not the ones you keep rigidly applying. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 12.147.22.210 (talk) 12:26, 30 October 2006
  • Support if that's the convention for India. Someone deleted the entire India part when I checked. —  AjaxSmack  08:14, 30 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
    • Alright, it's back. Change the convention and I'll change my vote. Otherwise, still support. —  AjaxSmack  17:20, 30 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
      • Both that and the opposing convention are there as proposals. Why one rather than the other? Septentrionalis 16:23, 3 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support. Either comma-state or parens-country. Comma-country should not be used for large, familiar, and (most particularly) federal nations. Bolivian Unicyclist 12:37, 30 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose. Comma separation works for other countries (Russia being an good example); I see no reason why it wouldn't work for India as well. Getting rid of parenthethes is a little but an important step forward towards the naming consistency.—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); 17:33, 30 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose It's a proposed convention which is itself a subject of a revert war. Unless some evidence of local usage can be presented. Septentrionalis 22:15, 30 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Kochi (India) is a featured article set to appear on the main page tomorrow --hydkat 14:00, 31 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • Strong opppose - the internationally recognised format for naming a city is {{city name}], {{country}} (or {{city name}], {{state}}, {{country}}. Putting India in brackets a) looks stupid; b) does not aid Wikipedia in any way; and c) defies international naming conventions. DJR (T) 02:41, 31 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Not necessarily. See how Encarta does it. --Polaron | Talk 02:51, 31 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
    • In that case Encarta is just exhibiting inconsistency and/or double standards for its articles. DJR (T) 12:14, 31 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
      • I'm not sure what you mean by double standards or inconsistency. Parentheses is how Encarta does disambiguation for all its articles. --Polaron | Talk 14:30, 31 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Discussion[edit]

Add any additional comments:

Much of the discussion above suggests that Hyderabad, Andra Pradesh would be better than either choice here, but it's not on the table. Septentrionalis 22:15, 30 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The problem here is that there is another Hyderabad: Hyderabad (Pakistan) (which too was recently changed to Hyderabad, Pakistan) --hydkat 13:53, 31 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
What problem? Call that city Hyderabad, Sindh if you like, or leave it where it is. No one is suggesting that simple Hyderabad be anything but a dab page. Septentrionalis 16:23, 3 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know. I somehow don't like Hyderabad, Sindh or Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh; it doesn't show that they are in different countries. But if you use that form then the comma separation is ok: its convention. If , India or , Pakistan is used... well you know what stand is :) --hydkat 20:07, 3 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

POV objections[edit]

"The dialect spoken in Hyderabad and the surrounding areas of Telangana is distinct from the dialect of the coastal Andhra region. Hyderabad and the rest of Telangana have a unique culture of their own in comparison to the coastal and Rayalseema regions of Andhra Pradesh. The Telugu spoke here has assimilated many Urdu words into it. And the Urdu spoken here is also unique, with some Marathi words and a unique Hyderabad accent, giving rise to a dialect sometimes called as Hyderabadi Hindi."

Above passage from intro need to be rewritten..looks like It was written by a telangana seperatist and plus the paragraph does'nt deserve to be in intro can be moved to culture section. for the following reasons

  • Hyderabadi hindi is not equivalent to telangana telugu. Hyderabadi telugu is similiar to telugu spoken in Nalgonda area. constrasting with only Coastal dialect is POV. I would say Hyderabad and surrounding areas have a distinct dialect than the rest of the state would be a more NPOV statement.
  • Hyderabad has unique culture vis-a-vis Adilabad, khammam or Mahabubnagar. so constrasting with only coastal and Rayalaseema is biased.

--Vyzasatya 16:43, 18 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Contrasting it with just the coastal region is not appropriate. Hydereabad has its own unique dialect compared to the rest of the state. I will rephrase the paragraph.

Sumanth 12:10, 23 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've also removed the sentence which clubs "hyderabad and the rest of telangana". That would be more appropriate in the Telangana article.

City A Greater Reality [17 Apr, 2007 l 0239 hrs ISTlTIMES NEWS NETWORK]

HYDERABAD: Citizens of Hyderabad, you have woken up this Tuesday to not only a new morning but to a new reality. You are now the residents of the second largest city in the country, next only to the national capital, New Delhi.

This has happened with the state government merging - through Government Order 261 issued on Monday - 12 surrounding municipalities with the Municipal Corporation of Hyderabad, thereby creating Greater Hyderabad.

The new urban agglomeration, of which you are proud citizens, sprawls across 625 square km with a population of 67 lakh.

Till Monday, Hyderabad had a population of 45 lakh living in an area of 172 sq km. The erstwhile city of the Nizams has now transformed into an area greater than Mumbai, Chennai and of course Bengalooru. Mumbai, however, will have a larger population than Hyderabad.

The 12 municipalities —L B Nagar, Gaddiannaram, Uppal Kalan, Malkajgiri, Kapra, Alwal, Quthbullapur, Kukatpally, Serilingampalli, Rajendranagar, Ramachandrapuram and Patancheru — now stand abolished and merged into Greater Hyderabad which will have a single corporation. All these municipalities are in Rangareddy district.

Besides launching it into the league of the fastest growing metros in the country, the establishment of Greater Hyderabad will "facilitate improved and high standard of civic services, provide better civic administrative mechanism, ensure better planning and focused development of the mega city, achieve more equitable devolution of finances and utilisation of resources, ensure uniform enforcement and make the city internationally competitive with world-class infrastructure and services,"information minister Md Shabbir Ali declared at a press conference here on Monday.

However, it would be idle to expect things to transform overnight in the newly-merged Hyderabad areas.

But Shabbir announced optimistically: "We will now develop the surrounding areas (and now merged parts) of the state capital on a par with Hyderabad. Special emphasis will be on upgrading the civic infrastructure in the peripheral areas."

With funds amounting to Rs 28,000 crore drawn from the Centre, state government and through public-private partnership, the projects that would be taken up by the new corporation include Outer Ring Road (Rs 5,000 crore); sewerage system (2,000 cr); storm water drains (500 cr); elevated express highway (500 cr); bus rapid transit system (500 cr); Hyderabad international airport (1,500 cr); and special package for old city (2,000 cr).

In a bid to allay the apprehensions of many that the creation of a mega city would mean higher taxes, chief minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy announced that such a move was not on the anvil.

The constitution of Greater Hyderabad came after the Supreme Court dismissed an MIM petition opposing the idea. On the drawing board for the last two years, analysts aver that Rajasekhara Reddy’s move is also aimed at containing the Telangana lobby by creating a vested interest for a "city state".

The creation of Greater Hyderabad will give a fillip to the construction industry which supports the ruling party handsomely, aver analysts. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 172.201.225.87 (talk) 08:21, 21 April 2007 (UTC).[reply]

Greater Hyderabad may not be the second largest city in terms of area. Do you any reliable reference? As far as I know, it is smaller than Bangalore (see [2], [3]). I guess the urban area would be smaller than that of other major metros. --(Sumanth|Talk) 11:41, 3 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Population of 67 millions ? 67 lak is 67 * 100,000. which is 6.7 million. I changed to have the metro population again. If you are going to consider "greater Hyderabad", you had to consider greater Los Angeles ... which might include Los Angeles ...even Seattle, depending on definitions. Look at a map of India. The entire subcontinent could be considered one city if you require a defined barren zone of X km between cities. Metro probably includes the 100th town after the edge of the city anyway.
