Brinoviski/Brunoviski

[edit]

Need information on location of the village of Brinoviski/Brunoviski, as no information about it appears on the Internet. Check discussion at to see if any Latvian Wikipedians can provide help: http://lv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diskusija:Latvija Badagnani 00:25, 2 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! Unfortunately, I cannot confirm that such village exists, at least nowadays. I would guess its Latvian spelling would be either "Brinovišķi" or "Brinoviči", but also I couldn't find anything starting with "Brinov" or "Brunov". It might not be a name of a village but a name of house, and in that case I guess it would be pretty hard to find it. Probably the post office could have information like that. But maybe some other Latvian Wikipedia user can help. --Knakts 14:42, 2 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe modern Brunava? [1] Brunava is in Jewish towns list - [2]. Maybe You can write to Bauska District Tourism Information Centre - [3].--Feens 22:00, 2 October, 2006 (UTC)
Bingo! In Deutsche Exonyme in Semgallen - [4] - Brunowischek, Brunowischki - Brunava (in Latvian transcription sch is š). --Feens 22:17, 2 October, 2006 (UTC)

I'm saying "Bravo" (and thank you) to you guys for uncovering this information. I have to hand it to you Latvian Wikipedians, we wouldn't have discovered this without you. Now our Hyman Bloom article will have this information about his true birthplace, as apparently no website discussing him has done this research, but simply printed the Yiddish ethnonym he has given all his life (he probably has never returned to Latvia). http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=%22hyman+bloom%22+brunava If any of you are interested, maybe you could make a Latvian Wikipedia article, maybe translating the English one, as he's a pretty famous Latvian American. Thanks again. Badagnani 15:30, 3 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Are Brunava and Brunaviski/Brunavišķi different towns?

[edit]

Hold on, the spelling "Brunaviski" comes up in Web searches of Bauska District, as well as Brunava. This website http://www.traveljournals.net/explore/latvia/locations/b/18.html says they have slightly different coordinates. Is it possible that Brunaviski is the former Jewish village but not in the city center of Brunava, maybe a little ways out of the town near the forested areas? Badagnani 15:42, 3 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Here you can see both Brunava and Brunavišķe on pre-WW2 map south of Bauska http://www.lithuanianmaps.com/images/1930_Latvia_041-Bauska2.jpg Kasp2008 (talk) 20:47, 24 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Should we use this spelling?

[edit]

Question: is this a better spelling? Brunavišķi Badagnani 15:45, 3 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Latvian article

[edit]

Is this the Latvian article on Brunava? I don't know what "Pagasts" means. http://lv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brunavas_pagasts Can we make an equivalent article for the English Wikipedia? Badagnani 16:00, 3 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Pagasts is smallest administrative division in Latvia. (aprox. parish in english). --Feens 09:10, 22 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Birth date

[edit]

The book by Judith Bookbinder lists his birth date as August 18, 1913. --Rosekelleher (talk) 15:54, 18 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Question

[edit]

"Bloom's still life paintings explore the theme of the harrowing and the beautiful creating modern-day vanitas paintings featuring Amphora pottery that was influenced by the Aesthetic Movement and Symbolists."

Do you really mean to say that the pottery was influenced by the Aesthetic Movement and Symbolists? Or was it the paintings that were influenced by the Aesthetic Movement and Symbolists? That sentence needs to be rewritten (as is, it's saying that Bloom's still life paintings created vanitas paintings) but I can't rephrase it if I don't know what it means. Rosekelleher (talk) 02:23, 9 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I found the answer here: [5] I don't think the fact that some of the pottery he painted was influenced by the Art Nouveau and Symbolist movements needs to be mentioned in the lead paragraph. And while they may be seen as vanitas paintings, I don't think they qualify as "harrowing". Rosekelleher (talk) 13:32, 9 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
