Title of the article[edit]

Please do not move this article back and forth between Itchō Itō and Itcho Ito. Please use this talk page to discuss what the naming conventions have to say about the transliteration of Japanese names. The relevant guideline, by the way, is Wikipedia:Manual of Style (Japan-related articles)#Article titles: "Article titles should use macrons as specified for body text except in cases where the macronless spelling is in common usage in English-speaking countries (e.g., Tokyo, Osaka, Sumo and Shinto, instead of Tōkyō, Ōsaka, Sumō and Shintō). Where macrons are used in the title, appropriate redirects using the macronless spellings should also be created which point to the actual title." And more specifically, Wikipedia:Manual of Style (Japan-related articles)#Names of modern figures. I believe the issue is whether the non-macronned form is "publicly used . . . in the English-speaking world." In my understanding, English Wikipedia applies this rule only for really well-known people, such as Junichiro Koizumi and Hideki Tojo. I think Mr. Itō does not meet this criterion. --Sushiya 17:38, 18 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Sushiya, Mr. Ito has been reported on by many major news agencies around the world. So, you have to pick one of these three:
  • Itcho Ito
  • Iccho Ito
  • Iccho Itoh

WhisperToMe 02:24, 19 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

WhisperToMe moved the article to Iccho Itoh, the form the mayor used in his English letter. This was a result of the discussions at Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style (Japan-related articles)#Tetsuya Shiroo and Itcho Ito and I don't oppose to it. If you want to discuss further, please go there. --Sushiya 05:15, 19 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I accidentally made the same mistake and moved the page to Itchō Itō, as that would be the revised Hepburn romanization for his name. I prefer that romanization system. However, since it's a "known" name in the press and the most use transcription is Iccho Itoh (plus it's the name the mayor used himself in an English letter), I reverted my edit, but added the alternative names to the article. Disputes with the mayor[edit]

The Friday April 20 edition of the Daily Yomiuri included an article "Ito's killer harbored a grudge." It mentions the disputes over the car damage by the pothole. There is also the line, "According to letters Shirou sent to TV Asahi Corp. that arrived Tuesday, Shirou had asked the municipal government to award him a project to demolish a hot spring resort facility, but his request was turned down."

This article also says that Ito was shot in front of his election campaign office, not in front of the train station. Can anyone confirm this? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 219.99.200.206 (talk) 06:06, 24 April 2007 (UTC).[reply]

Updated the article. He was shot in front of his office located outside the train station. --Sushiya 11:47, 24 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Any reason why that article's content couldn't be merged here? This article really isn't long enough to merit a subarticle on the subject of the assassination, and the other article doesn't seem to contain anything that wouldn't also be relevant here. Spreading the content around isn't useful. - Bobet 09:36, 26 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

If there are plans to incorporate translations of the Japanese articles ja:伊藤一長 and ja:長崎市長銃撃事件 (2007年), then they could remain separate here; if not, then yes, I agree the English articles should be combined. -- JHunterJ 12:21, 26 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I've redirected it here as it adds nothing more than what is already said here. Lugnuts 13:02, 14 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
