Note added by Brenwulf: "Illawong is a suburb by itself, not a neighbourhood with in Menai."

I am going from the status given by the GNB, who are the official arbiters in the state of NSW as to what is a suburb and what is not. According to them, Illawong is a neighbourhood within Menai. To settle this whole thing, I've sent them this email:

Hi GNB,

Can you please clarify the status of Illawong, New South Wales, in the
Sutherland Shire?

Within your online database, it is listed as a neighbourhood (
http://www.gnb.nsw.gov.au/place_naming/placename_search/extract?id=MackFxsyIt ) , but on the
Wikipedia we keep getting people who believe it is a suburb.

Can you please confirm Illawong's status? Can you also please clarify

Hi Nick

As stated in the Geographical names Boards register Illawong is a
neighbourhood in the suburb of Menai.

Illawong is not a suburb and can not be used as an address.

The Geographical Names Board will approach Sutherland Shire Council in
2006 to take part in the Determination of Address Locality Names and
Boundaries Process.
