Reworked article; please aggressively edit it![edit]

See Plight of the common soldier in the American Civil War. I took a very rough crack at reworking this article to be more of a companion to the Field Artillery in the American Civil War and Cavalry in the American Civil War. It certainly needs much more polishing (footnotes, more references, added detail and perhaps more sections), but this is a start for you readers to use as a baseline for future edits. Type away! Clunky lead, overly broad[edit]

The article is tagged because the current lead does not adequately meet Manual of Style guidelines for a lead paragraph which should be a concise summary of the article.
