It seems that the key element of an Infantry square is to not be broken, the breaking of the square is an integral part of any discusion of squares. –Gomm 23:49, 13 March 2007 (UTC)

Image needed[edit]

I have removed Image:Infantry Square.PNG from this article, as it fails Criterion 1 ("no free equivalent") of the Wikipedia:Non-free content criteria.

The image was being used here solely as an illustrative example of an infantry square. It could be replaced by diagrams, or by a free photograph captured at (for example) an historical reenactment. TenOfAllTrades(talk) 20:57, 7 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Quatre Bras[edit]

I've removed the reference to a square being broken at Quatre Bras in 1815 because as far as I know none was. Whoever put this in may have been thinking of the fact that the 42nd Regiment were caught by cavalry out of square and suffered heavy casualties before closing the square with a number of enemy cavalry inside it, who were all killed. Use during the American Civil War[edit]

The most recent issue of North & South Magazine (Vol. 14 No. 1), has a short article entitled "Profile: Form Square!" (pg 7-11) which lists every reference they've been able to uncover to the formation being used during the American Civil War. It was clearly not just the one instance mentioned in the article. Better illustration possible[edit]

I suggest cropping the Philippoteaux image to the left side and placing it at the head of the article as a better illustration of a square. Because of the smoke, Lady Butler’s painting could be mistaken for a much smaller Riley Square. Humphrey Tribble (talk) 06:05, 7 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
