Move from Sergeant to Inspector[edit]

I'm not going to revert this change, but I would like to state that I think it's not the best decision. Fictional characters are not like real humans, whose most recent title is the best one to use. For now (and my guess, even in the future), Lewis will be better known as "Sergeant Lewis" by most people, because of the popularity of the Morse series and novels, and so, I believe it is better to put his entry under that name, of course noting that he has been promoted. It is possible that in the future, he will be become better known as "Inspector Lewis," but that remains to be seen. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Acsenray (talk • contribs) .

Luckily, redirects allow people to find the article anyway, even if they haven't heard that Robbie was promoted.

Oppose Robbie is his nickname and few will be looking him up by that. He is an Inspector now and that is the title of the show in the US. This also follows on from Inspector Morse and that is how readers look up that programme. The other three suggested above make even less sense for someone looking this character up from scratch. They would also require all sorts of redirects which are to be avoided shenever possible. The page name is fine as it is. I would suggest finding some sources for the claims made on it because if the delitionistas ever get ahold of this page it stands little chance of staying on Wikipedia. This is a fictional character, not a real person. The name "Robbie" is used, and more commonly than "Robert". I suppose you could choose Robert Lewis, but I don't remember seeing that used on either show, though I do admit to not remembering the books over their episodes too well. The nickname *is* the name, since it's the one used for a fictional character. As for Inspector Morse, when did you ever see "Sergeant Morse" used in any great quantity? Sergeant Lewis is the most commonly used reference to this character, so "Inspector Lewis" is *not* the most common name, and should not be used as such. Ofcourse, he has been referred to as Lewis, Thames Valley CID, but I don't particularly like that title. Since the most common usage of "Inspector Lewis" is for the TV programme, the character shouldn't be named so anyway, it should be Inspector Lewis (character), but that still encounters the problem that it is not the most common name of the character (ie. Sergeant Lewis). Note also, Inspector Morse does not have a character page, only an overview of the Morse fictional franchise. 70.55.85.154 (talk) 04:45, 2 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Police force[edit]

The text of the article states that Lewis serves with the Thames Valley Police, while the infobox says he serves with Oxfordshire Police. In fact both are true. In the Morse episodes the responsible police force was TVP, but when the Lewis pilot was being planned in 2005 TVP abruptly refused permission for the use of their logos and branding, stating huffily that 'Thames Valley Police is not a fictional police force'. The producers decided to use the historic but now fictional Oxfordshire Police as this would make set dressing and vehicle provision easier given the unhelpful TVP attitude.

If TVP hadn't been formed in 1968, Lewis would probably be serving with Oxford City Police rather than the county force. It isn't clear why the producers didn't use this name.

In the prequel Endeavour, the future Inspector Morse is shown (accurately) joining Oxford City Police in 1965. --Ef80 (talk) 20:14, 22 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
