Proposal for renaming article

[edit]

The present name (Instructions of Amenemopet) accounts for 9 hits in google scholar and 26 in google books whereas Instruction of Amenemope has 498 and 155 hits respectively. As the latter form is the most common would anyone object to renaming the article? Taam (talk) 08:56, 13 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Since no objections I have gone ahead with the page move to the proposed title. Taam (talk) 08:33, 13 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Some Ideas for Future Improvements

[edit]

When Taam and I were working on this article together, we came up with a number of ideas for improvements which we never got around to (mainly because we both got caught up in the incessant apocalyptic battle over the Catholic Church page); and since he has already left Wikipedia and I am also on my way out, it's unlikely either of us ever will get to them now. Anyone else who would like to use these ideas to improve the article is welcome (and encouraged) to do so:

  • The "Majority Position" section needs more specific examples of mainstream commentaries and Bible translations (preferably from several different traditions) that accept this position.
  • The "Minority Position" section is currently a mess (not of my doing, or Taam's) and doesn't provide nearly enough discussion of the reasoning for and against that position; this needs to be cleaned up and fleshed out.
  • The comparison between specific verses of Proverbs and Amenemope needs to be properly cited to the literature (at least half a dozen scholars have tackled this subject, from Budge onward). The texts themselves also need to be derived consistently and correctly from scholarly and biblical sources that are either known to be copyright-free or else allow fair use in this context (e.g., the English Standard Version, which tends to be very literal and allows considerable quotation with proper credit).
  • There needs to be more discussion of the relationship between Amenemope and other Egyptian wisdom literature, especially the other Instructions.
  • There needs to be more discussion of the place of Amenemope in the larger context of the "Age of Personal Piety".
  • There needs to be more discussion and specific examples of the major themes of Amenemope, including especially the author's typically scribal devotion to Maat and Thoth.
  • It would also be nice to have some illustrations. One possibility is the common scene of a scribe doing his work under the watchful eye of Thoth in his Baboon form (which can be obtained copyright-free here and there). Another possibility would be a picture of Thoth in his Ibis form, which is also easily obtained. In both cases an appropriate quotation from Amenemope chapter 15 could be used as the caption.

I hope someone will take these ideas and run with them. Amenemope's Instruction is an important work, both historically and spiritually, and it deserves a better article than it presently has. (And don't forget the associated article on Amenemope himself, which at present is only a stub; he deserves better than that, too.) Harmakheru 22:26, 21 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
