Article renaming[edit]

I think we should move this article to WPBSA secondary professional tour. For a start it covers two different events by two different governing bodies, and I think it would work better as an article covering the secondary circuit. Both events were unified by their ability to promote players to the main tour, so it's better to cover it all as one topic. Betty Logan (talk) 21:21, 16 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

If you would prefer to do it that way, it might be better. It would be more in keeping with how we cover other tournaments. Technically the PTC is the successor to the Challenge Tour anyway as the secondary professional tour and that has its own article. Betty Logan (talk) 22:22, 16 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

WPBSA/EASB-professional/pro-am/amateur[edit]

The WPBSA established an open tour in 2001/02 season. This was a professional event open to professionals and amateurs (like the current PTC). The following season (2002/03) the EASB (which was a WPBSA partner at the time and organized amateur events) took over organization of the open tour and they maintained the same criteria, permitting pros and amateurs. Since the EASB is an amateur body by definition it cannot organize a professional event! That is the WPBSA's function. As such the status of the tournament switched from professional to pro-am: when amateur bodies permit professionals entry to their events this is what they are categorized as. The EASB split from the WPBSA the following season (2003/04) and barred all professionals and non-English nationals from participating, thus turning the event into an amateur competition. All of this documented in The Cuesport Book of Professional Snooker written by Eric Hayton, and appropriately referenced in the article. I am not able to put it online because it is a print text. However, it comprehensively lists all the seasons, all the tournament names and in the case of the Open Tour the governing bodies too. Betty Logan (talk) 20:25, 30 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Ronnie79 Hi Betty i am a snooker statistician researching all snooker events. Can you remove the "pro-am" status from the above series for the 2002/2003 season.The WPBSA and EASB were still in partnership.all professionals and amateurs were allowed to take part in these events if they wanted as an Open Tour.It was similar to the PTC or more recently the European Tour events. Professional and amateurs playing in an event starting on a level playing field is not a pro-am event. A "pro-am" is where a professional has to give an amateur player an 18 or 21 point head start like in the 'Pink Ribbon' this is a proper "pro-am". Can you have a look at this please ? Pro-ams do not preclude competition on level terms. The EASB is an amaetur body and amateur bodies by definition do not organize professional events. The EASB being in partnership with the WPBSA does not make EASB events professional any more than it makes WPBSA events amateur: all it means here is that they had an arrangement where each others members could enter some of each others' events. When the WPBSA ran the open tour it was a professional event. When the EASB took over it became a pro-am. Once they precluded professionals it became an amateur event. If you want to re-label an event organized by an amateur organization a professional event you are going to have to provide a source that explicitly labels it as such.
