An informative and necessary page but lacking in any significant recent updates, the article seems to fade after about 2008. Use of relative timelines[edit]

A few sections throughout this article use words such as 'presently' and 'recently', but seem to refer to events either occurring several years in the past or multi-year occurrences that ceased several years in the past. Could these be updated to cite specific years? Not updating myself as I'm not really abreast of all sections of this article, but there certainly seems to be a red flag here. 123.3.34.36 (talk) 23:45, 22 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Communications infrastructure[edit]

Starting to work on the section I labelled above as "(transit?) infrastructure". It's 3am now so this probably isn't any good and is so far unsourced. Please improve if you are able --gummAY (talk) 15:53, 2 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]


Due to Australia's large size, sparse population and relative remoteness to other countries, a significant amount of infrastructure is required for Internet communications.

Perhaps the most vital of these are the three submarine telecommunications cables that link the continent to the rest of the world. SEA-ME-WE 3 lands at Perth, and AJC and the Southern Cross Cable land at Sydney.


  • do we bother mentioning JASARUS and APNG2?
  • satellite: Domestic satellite system for use in very remote areas, primarily the Optus satellites C1 D1 and D2.
  • Interstate transit: Telstra, Optus, Nextgen Networks, PowerTel and AAPT are the main Intercity Networks with a collection of other providers having regional networks or Eastern Coast links.


Potential sources

The section on Residential Internet Access calls for citation for comments about shaping and excess charges.

Pricing[edit]

Sure do you have any sources from which we could start the section i.e. OECD numbers, UN figures,IMF , world bank or international NGOs

Some old 2003 data to start, but need to trace it to the source: http://adsl-cable.net/guide/costs.html. Funny that Australia seems to be the only country where the cost has increased in the past 4 years (Chart 4k). Chart 5k is also quite telling... Definitely need some of these stats on the page. when the pricing section it would be good to say the manner in which Australian's are billed for their internet access. The system i have found is that of monthly internet access with bandwith caps, with the breached of caps resulting in reduced speeds or excess bill.

I think this is really a critical factor. It's one thing having high speeds available, but you can't compare it with other first world nations with prices of $69.95 for 1GBdown/2GBup 1.5-8Mbps/384kbps then being "shaped" to dialup speeds of 64kbps (Westnet, Cairns, Nov 2009)! - Ikzing (talk) 01:39, 23 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

De-commercialising[edit]

Hi All,

After the comments from User:Gnangarra, especially "be careful of focusing on news events and individual companies" I've gone through the article trying to 'de-commercialise' and clarify things. I welcome your feedback!

I agree, news events especially those to do with NBN should be treated carefully, there is a seperate article for the NBN so any controversy debate or indepth analysis by experts should be placed there while a reference or 2 in the section on this page should be alright.

With the companies maybe focusing on where it is relevent to mention them or would be of use to the reader, meaning that they could find more infomation on the comapany's network/infastructure. We shouldn't make comparisions between company's or make reference to the company when it is not relevent e.g. comapany X is better than company Y or Company X is number one in such-and-such service.

Also there is alot of in-line statistics about past rates of internet useage, this is relevent but may be better presented in a line graph with in-line stats being put in for significant milestones e.g. take up exceeds 50%. I'll try and get on this, if someone wants to try as well i have found good stats on the abs

Popular websites and Internet Use[edit]

This entire article seems to be devoted to the infrastructure and technical aspects of internet in Australia. Is there an article about popular websites for internet users in Australia and things like the rate and number of Australians that shop online, or could this kind of information be added to this article? I must respectfully disagree. This article is indeed about the technical aspects because that is the meaning of the term "Internet". Including a discussion of web sites etc would perpetuate the fallacy that the web and the Internet are the same thing. Slow internet?[edit]

With the introduction of Telstra's 100Mbps Coaxial cable and the 100Mbps NBN (Which are both world-standard in speed) I do not think that the comment about Australias internet being slow (Broadband internet in Australia is much slower (...) than in nearly all other industrialised nations) Is accurate. It still however is very expensive in comparison.

Should we change it?

Depends where you live really and the difference between theoretical and practical outcomes for example i supposed to be getting 25 MB/S but i get 150KB/S when the wires are feeling charitable. Also averages can give false impression that there are higher speeds than actually exist. e.g. 1 person with a very high speed and the 3 people with low speeds creates a mid range speed but does not reflect the speeds that are being experienced by a large percentage of users.

Then there are the black spots and issues relating to cost effectiveness for myself i could buy into the coxial cable outside my house but it would be double the cost with reduced cap as well as being locked into a contract for 24 months.

Restructure?[edit]

This page obviously needs a bit of work. I think the top priorities are: 1. ensuring it's all in chronological order and readable, 2. updating with information from the NBN rollout, 3. going back and finding sources for existing unsourced material.
