2003 "narrow" loss[edit]

I am not sure it is fair to say "She contested the seat of Dundee West in the 2003 election, where she narrowly lost to the Labour incumbent Kate Maclean". This glosses over the fact that Kate Maclean increased her majority from just over 100 votes ahead of the SNP candidate to over 1,000 ahead of McGugan. Indeed Maclean's vote fell from 1999 by 4.6%, but the SNP vote by 8.5%. In any case a four figure majority is not generally seen as a narrow win, and in this case could be contrasted with the 90 vote majority won by the SNP in Dundee East on the same day.
