martyrdom

[edit]

My understanding is that one of the reasons the Mohawk feared the Jesuit missionaries, in addition to their supposed "practicing magic", was that they rightly saw them as spies for the French Government, who supported their enemies, the Hurons.

The Dutch, British, and French all used missionaries to attempt to influence the Mohawks and gain control of the fur trade. The Mohawks didn't seem to have the same problem with the Dutch and English missionaries as they did with the French.

This isn't my bailiwick. It would be nice if someone could find a reference and include it. Peter Flass (talk) 13:57, 19 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
