Isambard Owen nephew of Isambard Kingdom Brunel?[edit]
Some web sites claim that Isambard Owen was nephew of Isambard Kingdom Brunel. This is apparently a myth. Isambard Owen's father, William George Owen, married Amelia Martin. Brunel married Mary Elizabeth Horsley; his sister Sophia married Benjamin Hawes and his sister Emma married George Harrison. Mary Elizabeth Horsley's siblings were Sophy, Fanny, Charles and John: Sophy never married, Fanny married Seth Thompson, Charles married Georgina Hildebrand, John married Elvira Walter. There's no evident relationship between Brunel and Owen. The Times obituary of Isambard Owen doesn't say that he was Brunel's nephew.
On the other hand, WIlliam Owen worked for Brunel for more than 20 years; Brunel may well have been Isambard Owen's godfather.
