DC Comics character?

The Isis comics published by DC were released as a merchandising tie-in with the television series. The character did not appear in comics prior to the existence of the tv series, and was apparently never considered part of the larger DCU continuity. The character has not appeared in DC Comics since the cancellation of the series. Is it therefore accurate to say that the character is a DC Comics character? I think not. The Micronauts appeared in comics published by Marvel, and those comics even featured other Marvel characters such as Spider-Man, yet those books were merchandising tie-ins and the Micronauts were licensed characters and are not considered part of the Marvel continuity. I think the Isis situation is identical. Other websites list Isis as having been created for the tv show, not as an adaptation of an existing character. I think the statement, Isis is a DC Comics superhero, is therefore inaccurate. Canonblack 12:48, 22 December 2005 (UTC)

That was true once, but now there is a DC Comics superhero named Isis.

And to add to the unsigned comment above, the Isis character appeared in numerous cross-overs with DCU characters in the 1970s, so I put her in the same category as Blue Beetle which was not created as a DCU character but became one. The new version of Isis is, at first glance, a new character, but is physically identical to the TV character right down to the costuming. That would imply strongly that DC has the rights to do whatever they want with the character. 23skidoo 20:17, 23 August 2006 (UTC)

Well, granted, the character was a TV personality first (paired up with the "Shazam" TV show), but then she debuted in the 'Shazam' comic book (issue #25) which was published by DC Comics, and then had her own series (albeit short-lived) which was also published by DC Comics, so this would tend to make her a DC Comics character (also, since these Shazam stories were part of Earth-S continuity, by default that made her a resident of Earth-S in pre-Crisis continuity). Regardless of how infrequently she appeared, she was still an established DC Comics character. Starmiter 01:21, 4 May 2007 (UTC)

As a belated follow-up to this discussion, since Isis was, nonetheless, originally created as a TV character -- her comic book debut not occuring until the next year -- it's incorrect to list the comic writers and artists as her creators. I've changed the infobox to list her TV creators instead. If others feel the comic wirters should be listed as well, then a note should be added that they only created the comic book adaptation. 68.146.41.232 20:45, 14 September 2007 (UTC)

I guess the problem here is which question are we asking: "Did Isis appear in the DC Universe?" or "Does DC Comics own Isis?" The answer to the first question is "yes", she did and she interacted with other DC characters, while the answer to the second question is "no" Filmation created her and still owned the rights, as shown by the fact that DC did not reprint her appearances in "Shazam" in the recent "Showcase: Shazam" TPB. IMHO, she falls into the same catagory as Conan and the Mirconauts (sadly I can't think of a good DC example), meaning, yes, they were part of that company's universe while that company had the rights to publish those characters, but now that they no longer possess those rights, the characters aren't part of it anymore. I think the best solution is to split the entry into two parts, one for the TV Isis and one for the current DC interation.
