"Since the death of Dr John Stone in 1957, many policies for Stonehenge have been off centre. Dr Stone appears to have been the last civil servant who had a good understanding of Salisbury Plain. He had 36 years of excavating experience on Salisbury Plain. He was the author of Wessex Before the Celts, which was published in 1957. He and Frank Stevens were among the best known people in Salisbury. He was a deputy director of the biological centre at Porton."
