John Gavin (director)Jack Gavin – Known under this name at imdb.com and Hal Roach comedies. Maher27777 (talk) 21:08, 24 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  • Support per nomination. -LilHelpa (talk) 14:12, 1 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support Having never heard of the guy, I decided to check how he was referred to in the Australian newspapers of the times and searched for artucles about Gavin and Thunderbolt (one of his movies picked at random). After eliminating those involving Thunderbolt as a race horse, sports team, or boxing commentary and those about the actual bushranger Thunderbolt pursued by actual police inspector Gavin (a coincidence or was there a family connection?!) I ended up with the following ways of referring to him with counts: J.S. Gavin (1), J.H. Gavin (1), J.F. Gavin (3), Jack Gavin (5), Jack F. Gavin (1), Mr Gavin (1), John F. Gavin (5), John Gavin (3), J. Francis Gavin (1). I note that the 3 John Gavin mentions are from the 1990s, the others were contemporaneous. I presume the J.S. Gavin and J.H. Gavin had their facts wrong and would have written J.F. Gavin if they had known his middle name correctly. I note that newspapers of those times were relatively formal so J.F. Gavin would be the "normal form" I would expect to see, so the use of Jack (a nickname) in that period in the newspaper tends to support the notion that he was widely known as Jack. So on that basis I tend to agree with Roman Spinner that Jack Gavin or John F. Gavin would be appropriate choices and am slightly swayed towards Jack Gavin because of its prevalence in an era of otherwise formal naming in newspapers. • Comment Jack may indeed be the WP:COMMONNAME, but the unreliable imdb.com is probably something to avoid citing for a move nomination. Dl2000 (talk) 04:39, 2 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
