according to, weasel words

[edit]

It semes bizarre to say "according to Walker, her mother is ..." I have never seen this in other wikipedia articles : it suggests she might be lying! I think the words "according to Walker" should be cut. 2A01:CB08:8BE:AA00:C65:16B8:4077:91AC (talk) 07:31, 17 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The section about her parents is ambiguous

[edit]

A basic issue: the section regarding her parents is confusing to read. Specifically, the usage of “she” to refer to Jackie Walker’s mother is very confusing. Consider the following passage:

“According to Walker, her mother, Dorothy Brown, was a black Jamaican and Sephardi Jew who was descended partly from a Portuguese Jew who came to the West Indies during the days of Christopher Columbus, and a female slave who converted to Judaism on marriage. Born in Kingston, Jamaica, in 1915, she won a scholarship to study medicine in the United States, where she married and had a daughter, giving up her studies.”

This is already quite confusing: by the time we get to “she won a scholarship”, the previous sentence has introduced three different women (I think): “Walker”, “her mother, Dorothy Brown”, and “a female slave”.

The paragraph continues in this fashion. If anything, it gets even more
