Merger proposal[edit]

The articles about Jadeite and Jadeitite seem to be about the same material and therefore I would suggest they should be merged. This has arisen due to discussion about the correct link for an axe head found at the Sweet Track during its FAC. Gillian Varndell (Curator, British Museum, Neolithic Collections: Neolithic of Britain and Europe see details at BM suggested Jadeitite is now considered the more appropriate term based on A Sheridan, D Field, Y Pailler, P Pétrequin, M Errera and S Cassen, The Breamore jadeitite axehead and other Neolithic axeheads of Alpine rock from central southern England. Wiltshire Archaeological & Natural History Magazine, 103 (2010) pp. 16-34 - to which I do not have access. I would be grateful if those more expert than I could discuss and decide the best term.— Rod talk 22:01, 5 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Jadeite is a pyroxene mineral while jadeitite is a metamorphic rock composed largely of jadeite. Therefore, geologically they are two different things. Archeologically I can see there might be confusion. Most such artefacts would seem to be made of the rock...which is mostly made of the mineral. So I can see your point, however the articles are about the rock and the mineral rather than the objects made from them. As they are distinct materials — no merge is needed. Rather the jadeitite article should be expanded as it is a rather brief stub. Vsmith (talk) 22:38, 5 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
