King of the Marathoners?[edit]

The characterization of James Crowley as "King of the Marathoners" seems to be more cigarette-company hyperbole than a serious description. Checking the World Marathon Rankings published by the Association of Road Racing Statisticians [1], Crowley appears there in only three years, between 1908 and 1910. In 1908, he ran two marathons, coming first in one and second in the other; he is ranked 15th on the 25 mile list. In 1909 he ran five marathons, coming first three times, second once, and fourth once (at Boston, the most competitive event); he is ranked 26th that year. Five marathons is a lot, but there are many listed who ran more -- e.g., Sam Mellor, Sid Hatch and Dorando Pietri are all listed as having completed six marathons in 1909, with several first places. Willi Kolehmainen ran eight marathons, four of them firsts. In 1910 Crowley is listed only once, but in a good time that gives him fourth place in the rankings. So I'd be inclined to call him "Flash in the Pan," not "King of the Marathoners".
