Killed while a prisoner?[edit]

The article in National Geographic says he was "killed while being held prisoner by Quantrill’s Raiders, a band of Rebel guerrillas." See Harry Katz, National Geographic Magazine, Civil War Battlefield Art, page 44.--Trilotat (talk) 18:31, 26 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

O'Neill's corpse showed that he had been shot at some physical distance in time and space from the deaths of his fellow noncombatants. Nobody knows why, and it is speculated that his surrender may have been accepted and then overridden by his ill-disciplined captors.[1] The U.S. Army says that when a soldier surrenders and is then killed on the field, he is KIA; but O'Neill was not a soldier. He was an embedded news correspondent. So the circumstances of O'Neill's death open up some complexities. Suggestions are welcome. Bigturtle (talk) 15:21, 27 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Phrasing[edit]

Perhaps "Within Kansas Leavenworth was a strongly pro-Union town..." can be reworded to "Leavenworth was a strongly pro-Union town compared to most of Kansas." The rest of the sentence can be reworded to stand on its own without this "pro-Union town" phrase.--Trilotat (talk) 21:46, 27 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
