There were not many white people born in Hawaii in 1838, but having trouble finding more info on this person. A missionary doctor James William Smith (1810–1887), father of William Owen Smith, did not arrive until 1841. Lowell Smith (1802–1891) did arrive in 1833 and had five children. Trying to track them down. Asa Bowen Smith (1809–1886) did not arrive until 1843. Given naval career, however, he might have been son of a sea captain just visiting. Dead ends on those. Another question: article says "March 20, 1905" but then later says "9 July 1872" and I cannot find any source that gives the 1905 date. It would be odd to wait that long to award the medal I think, so suspect this is a typo? W Nowicki (talk) 21:01, 9 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Also in a report of the incident here the commander seems to recommend medals for Richard Pile, John Johnson, John O'Neil, George Hill, ahd Austin Denham, but not Smith? Might add this as a source in any event. W Nowicki (talk) 21:08, 9 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
