1.

Yes, Jane Yolen writes and edits sf/f, but is famous in other areas as well. Including folklore, which I didn't go into really. Added links 15-March-06 and 18-March-06. Added titles, categories, and comments about poetry. Endicott Studios has a really good bio.

2.

I'm not suited at this time, but I think some mention of her book Touch Magic should be put forward. It was particularly influential, and notably different from the rest of her works.

Fair use rationale for Image:Hp-yolen.jpg

[edit]

Image:Hp-yolen.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Graphic novel

[edit]

There is no mention of foiled, her graphic novel, released in spring of 2010, I don't know enough about the graphic novel to add it myself. — Odin_son 16:39, 28 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Miscount?

[edit]

The line "She has written around 4590 poems and 3452 short stories but only 8 books; 67 of these won awards." seems to have bogus numbers. Jane obviously has written more than eight books, and while it's possible that she has written three thousand short stories and four thousand poems, both figures seem a little high.

This is a good point.
At least the revision must give careful attention to the distinction between author and editor.

Assessment

[edit]

I have downgraded this article from C to Start (Children's literature).

  1. Yolen's list of publications is miles long but the lead obscurely highlights two picture books whose illustrators won the Caldecott Medal; the two illustrators are not identified and the books do not qualify for the Selected works.
  2. Personal life is a mere blurb without a reference.
  3. Career provides no chronological information and identifies no editor or publisher --not even when or which (forced her) "to hire her own publicist". About half features her criticism of Harry Potter and of publishers. About one quarter is litany of awards she has won and of her favorite authors. The section opens with the miscount(?) or misleading counts that were noted here 20 months ago.
  4. Selected works ("Bibliography") does not evidently include any works that are notable for their place in her career. As displayed the selection begins with "The Pit Dragon Trilogy" without any explanation (something that a genuine Career section might provide). Except for two 1970s "novels and books", the selection to four subsections begin in 1981, 1988, 1990, and 1988. Meanwhile ISFDB lists works so early as a 1959 poem (age 20), 1963 nongenre book (age 24), 1968 shortfiction (age 29), 1970 chapterbook [we list one from 1971], 1973 anthology, 1974 collection, 1974 novel, and 1977 review. (A genuine Career section would identify some that may have biographical or literary significance.)

Selected works, continued

[edit]

See point 4 above. I changed heading 5 to "Selected works".

Why highlight "The Pit Dragon Chronicles" by separate listing, among her several series?

Groupings "novels and books", "novellas and novelettes" do not work. Why highlight The Devil's Arithmetic as short fiction, among her numerous books?

Our movie article Merlin and the Dragons says it was both based on a story by Yolen --that is, an adaptation-- and later adapted by Yolen for publication as a book. The story and book should be listed here and the film covered as an adaptation, or the movie article corrected.

We have listed one "Folklore collection edited by Jane Yolen". Is that the grounds to highlight folklore in the lead sentence?

I relegated 'folklore' from the lead sentence to infobox Genres. For the list of works the question remains whether the one listed anthology is Yolen's only folklore publication or should carry another "Selected" heading. --P64 (talk) 19:06, 25 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Yolen - Grand master?

[edit]

Yolen named SF Grand Master, when still alive, Ben Bova, Piers Anthony, Kate Wilhelm - very strange...--Yasnodark (talk) 15:29, 30 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
