Title
[edit]Change it in to "2022 Badghis earthquake", it's more specific. Gianluigi02 (talk) 20:51, 17 January 2022 (UTC)
- I did, but it was moved back. Jim Michael (talk) 15:52, 18 January 2022 (UTC)
- There should be a formal WP:RM discussion if a move is proposed. The present name seems preferable to me, per WP:RECOGNIZE and WP:COMMONNAME.[1] — Amakuru (talk) 13:24, 19 January 2022 (UTC)
Requested move 19 January 2022
[edit]- The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
The result of the move request was: not moved. There's agreement that the article should be moved only if another earthquake makes further disambiguation necessary. (closed by non-admin page mover) Extraordinary Writ (talk) 16:17, 26 January 2022 (UTC)
2022 Afghanistan earthquake → 2022 Badghis earthquake – Specify province; earthquakes are common in Afghanistan. Jim Michael (talk) 16:00, 19 January 2022 (UTC)
- Oppose per WP:RECOGNIZE and WP:PRECISE. With the best will in the world, many people have not heard of "Badghis", which makes it difficult to identify where this event took place from the title. The event is commonly referred to in the news on first mention as being in Afghanistan too.[2][3][4] Finally, there may be many earthquakes in Afghanistan, but this is the only one (so far) that is newsworthy in 2022, so the title is precise enough per policy. — Amakuru (talk) 16:45, 19 January 2022 (UTC)
- The redirect 2022 Afghanistan earthquake will lead people to the article. Dunutubble (talk) 16:47, 19 January 2022 (UTC)
- That's all the more reason not to move it. The article should be hosted at the WP:COMMONNAME, not at a more obscure name with a redirect from the common name, per article titling policy. — Amakuru (talk) 16:50, 19 January 2022 (UTC)
- The redirect 2022 Afghanistan earthquake will lead people to the article. Dunutubble (talk) 16:47, 19 January 2022 (UTC)
- Support: Earthquakes are unfortunately not uncommon in Afghanistan. The country is a highly mountainous terrain lying on numerous tectonic faults, most notoriously the Chaman fault. There could well be more than one incident in the near future. Dunutubble (talk) 16:46, 19 January 2022 (UTC)
- Firstly, that's a WP:CRYSTALBALL argument, such a case can be evaluated as and when it arises. Secondly, the future earthquake could easily occur in the same province anyway, so the same problem would apply. Probably better to disambiguate per month in that instance. January 2022 Afghanistan earthquake and March 2022 Afghanistan earthquake etc. — Amakuru (talk) 16:52, 19 January 2022 (UTC)
- Should 2013 Laghman earthquake be moved to 2013 Afghanistan earthquake? We should be consistent. Jim Michael (talk) 17:08, 19 January 2022 (UTC)
- Why not list all earthquake Wikipedia articles to one main page and then group them based on a specified time, location and/or date? Rzzor (talk) 17:59, 19 January 2022 (UTC)
- Lists of earthquakes does that. Jim Michael (talk) 18:33, 19 January 2022 (UTC)

- Oppose per Amakuru. Big news outlets are simply calling it "Afghanistan" or "western Afghanistan" earthquake.Dora the Axe-plorer (explore the morgue) 22:50, 19 January 2022 (UTC)
- I wouldn't oppose a move to 2022 western Afghanistan earthquake however Dora the Axe-plorer (explore the morgue) 22:51, 19 January 2022 (UTC)
- Oppose per Amakru. ArsenalGhanaPartey (talk) 00:15, 20 January 2022 (UTC)
- Oppose. The main purpose of an article title is for a reader to be able to find and quickly identify the article that they are looking for. The current title does that best. Rreagan007 (talk) 04:41, 20 January 2022 (UTC)
- Wait. If there is another earthquake in Afghanistan this year, then change it. Yxuibs (talk) 04:45, 20 January 2022 (UTC)
- 'Oppose I think this title looks fine.--Seyyed(t-c) 04:36, 21 January 2022 (UTC)
- Oppose: as per Amakaru and Rreagan007 Aleena98 (talk) 11:58, 21 January 2022 (UTC)
- Oppose with alternative option: I would suggest inserting a month to the title to help clarify. It sounds like the main argument in support of changing the title is to specify when and where this happened. The opposition is mainly stating mainstream news sources are using the generic title. I suggest keeping the title the same with the addition of "January 2022 Afghanistan earthquake" or the alternative that was previously suggested "2022 western Afghanistan earthquake" to address both issues. Jurisdicta (talk) 17:55, 21 January 2022 (UTC)
- The month is only needed if another major earthquake occurs in Afghanistan this year. Jim Michael (talk) 17:57, 21 January 2022 (UTC)
