Unreadable[edit]

This appears to be a machine-translated version of this article on the Japanese-language Wikipedia: Japan's space development. Should an attempt be made to translate it, or should it just be removed? Wingman4l7 (talk) 04:12, 6 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Quite agree - when I saw the phrase 'your abode your', which is meaningless, I instinctively thought 'Oh yeah, Google Translate strikes again!'213.127.210.95 (talk) 16:43, 26 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
The tags in the article clearly state that this is a machine translation. If you can help, please rewrite the text from the original. --Ita140188 (talk) 01:54, 28 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Or, instead of reading the original Japanese Wikipedia text, research reliable sources and rewrite in appropriate English. There is no need to slavishly follow the Japanese text. BE BOLD! --Bejnar (talk) 04:18, 2 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Thanks to dedicated editors like Pikaryaa, this article is almost fully readable now. --Bejnar (talk) 04:18, 2 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Additional Sources[edit]

I started to fix the automatic translation by translating manually from the Japanese source. The following source might be useful for adding information to the History->Dawn section: [1]. bamse (talk) 16:43, 15 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I found another one: [2]. Oda Mari (talk) 13:55, 16 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Rename[edit]

It has been suggested over at WikiProject Spaceflight that this article be renamed Japanese space program (currently a redirect) to bring the article into line with Wikipedia's other articles, e.g Soviet space program, Chinese space program etc. It seems pretty straight-forward to me but wanted to check there were no objections. ChiZeroOne (talk) 15:13, 18 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

No objection, just a question. The first sentence of the corresponding Japanese article (from which this one is translated) defines the scope as Japan's/Japanese space exploration. Is "space exploration" the same as "program" for the purpose of this article? bamse (talk) 20:22, 18 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
It was noted in an unrelated discussion on the project pages, Category:Spaceflight, that often "space exploration" is incorrectly used as a synonym for all spaceflight whether it be actual exploration or more mundane activities like telecommunications. That seems to be the case here, indeed the current article already discussess aspects of the Japanese space program that are not exploration. I would consider the correct scope to be all Japanese government-led space activities, it would probably be preferable to use more general terms like "spaceflght"/"spaceflight activities" instead of "space exploration" because much of what the article discussess isn't exploration. ChiZeroOne (talk) 00:59, 19 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I see. As for me, feel free to move the article. If it is not urgent, we could also wait until the article is fully translated (so far I translated 2 sections only, for the rest somebody put an awful google translation) to see what it is about and what terminology to use. bamse (talk) 09:57, 19 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with the suggestion. Oda Mari (talk) 06:37, 20 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Support Bamse's suggestion; complete the translation, then move unless something major is dug up that convinces us otherwise. Colds7ream (talk) 13:33, 20 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
