New page

[edit]

Hello wikipedians,

I decided to rewrite the biography of Jean-Pierre Changeux. Initially I only corrected it a bit, but there was too much work to do. The page basically did not adequately reflect the scientific production of Changeux. So I rewrote everything. I tried to keep some of the original sentences in the new version. It is pretty dense at the moment, far too technical and factual. I will try to improve it in the future, by making it more edible for non-specialists, replacing the research in its context, and also adding figures. A note on references: I only referenced the main scientific papers based on two criteria: the vast majority are papers that have been cited more than 100 times in the scientific literature. There are three exceptions: Hucho 1972, that has been cited only 78 times (as of Nov 18 2008), is the first paper where the pentameric structure is mentioned I think. If I am wrong, I'll delete it. Devillers-Thiery 1979 is not cited much (47 times) because people quote the full sequence of the nicotinic receptor subunits, published three years later. But it was worth quoting it for prior art. And of course the first ever purification of a receptor for a neurotransmitter is never quoted because it has been published in a French journal. People generally quote the paper describing the toxin used to characterise the receptor. Nicolas Le Novere (talk) 01:07, 19 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Funding of Research

[edit]

As of 2020 Changeux appeared in headlines by asserting that nicotine might block Covi-19. His name still carries weight but it has been established (Le Monde) that his research benefited from the funds of the Council for Tobacco Research, an organization known to have participated in systematical disinformation about tobacco use. Header of the list of books

[edit]

When I re-wrote and re-structured this page, I wished to list the books written by Jean-Pierre Changeux. It is in my opinion quite important, because Changeux is known, beside his research activity, as an author of sometimes controversial books. The list was not aimed to be the list of scientific articles by Changeux, the most famous being listed in the section "references", and certainly not a list of articles or books ABOUT Changeux. I therefore called this section "Books", and then "Books by Jean-Pierre Changeux". This is not unusual on Wikipedia. See the page about Francis Crick. This section cannot be called Bibliography, because this would understate a comprehensive list of published works by Changeux. But it does not even list the books that Changeux edited, without authoring. I fine this easy to understand. Nevertheless, Emerson7 changed this header six times to Bibliography. I tried to start a discussion on his/her talk page, without success. So, I guess a first step for the resolution is to seek a third opinion. From WP:3O: Is "Selective bibliography" an acceptable compromise? Mentioning the author's name in the heading is a little redundant, and, as you say, simply calling it "Books" is inaccurate. BradV 19:22, 27 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
There seems to also be some confusion as to the meaning of the word "bibliography." In Wikipedia, the word is to refer to a list of books by the subject of the article, similar to filmography and discography (See the Manual of Style). (That's not the usage I was taught, but when in rome...) BradV 20:12, 27 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
On WP:Guide_to_layout#Headings_and_sections, one finds: "The "Works," "Bibliography", or "Publications" section provides a list of books or other works created by the subject of the article." That would clearly understate the list of all the written production by Changeux ("other work"). One possibility to clearly state the aim would be to create in addition a section "Books edited by Changeux". Alternatively, one could have another page containing all the printed works by Changeux (I shudder at the thought). What I don't like about that is the extra-click which would deter some readers to scroll the list. "Selected Bibliography" with subsections on written and edited books could be also a possibility. One could move in there the "Scientific publications of historical significance". Would-that suit you Emerson7? Nicolas Le Novere (talk) 22:06, 27 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
