Gay Icon Project

In my effort to merge the now-deleted list from the article Gay icon to the Gay icons category, I have added this page to the category. I engaged in this effort as a "human script", adding everyone from the list to the category, bypassing the fact-checking stage. That is what I am relying on you to do. Please check the article Gay icon and make a judgment as to whether this person or group fits the category. By distributing this task from the regular editors of one article to the regular editors of several articles, I believe that the task of fact-checking this information can be expedited. Thank you very much. Philwelch 20:47, 24 Mar 2005 (UTC)

About the picture

It is a fuzzy dull image. Could there not be a better one here?

sweat and urine

She began to tire quickly, prespire heavily, and her body sweat were laced with urine as her kidneys stopped functioning.

What on earth does this mean? Flapdragon 01:45, 16 December 2005 (UTC)

At the very end Harlow contracted nephritic poisoning, a toxic side effect of kidney failure. With the kidneys shut down, the body cannot excrete waste through normal channels, instead it comes out through the breath and sweat. PatrickJ83 00:41, 22 March 2006 (UTC)

Very inappropriate information

I am not surprised of course, but I am not going to explain 100 times and be reverted, - basically wiki then looses and it should. Paul Bern was possibly drained in the perfume, no proof, - also his lover Millette it is accepted she committed suicide but there is evidence dirty play was involved, - so how come it does not say... allegedly... so be careful with such statements. - And case was reopened as you will see noted on Bern bio, grow up vandals! What, no free wiki here!

There is nothing mentioned of this in David Stenn's very relevant 1992 Harlow bio. I have mainly seen this in gossipy, low-brow publications like Kenneth Anger's "Hollywood Babylon" and the like. PatrickJ83 00:42, 22 March 2006 (UTC)

Paragraph formatting

Hi fellow Harlow heads!

I want to talk a bit about paragraph formatting. Someone took apart the paragraph sentences in the "later career and death" section and moved them apart so the paragraphs were only two sentences or so each. This is improper formatting - a paragraph is one train of thought, it remains together until another train of thought. So the paragraph on the death cause myths should remain together as it all discusses one thing, and not be taken apart. Thanks. PatrickJ83 01:59, 26 March 2006 (UTC)

The Great Rewrite: A blog

Today is the beginning of the Great Rewrite (as I call it) of the Jean Harlow page. It is my intention to reinvent this page from a superficial and boring article into the best, most useful and most comprehensive source on Jean Harlow information on the web.

First entry, April 22

  • Today I totally re-worded the intro paragraph. I also expanded on the trivia section, removing dubious stuff and inserting more interesting trivia such as paralells with Marilyn Monroe and the like.
  • I began my complete reworking of the Early life section. Got about 70% done. PatrickJ83 03:54, 22 April 2006 (UTC)

Second Entry, April 23

  • Finished re-write of Early life section. PatrickJ83 20:10, 23 April 2006 (UTC)

Third entry, May 10.

  • Re-wrote Career beginnings section. PatrickJ83 09:18, 10 May 2006 (UTC)

Trivia suggestion

It's a widely held view here that "trivia" sections are not entirely appropriate for our articles, however a lot of the points made under this heading in this article are interesting, and probably important enough to include in the article. My suggestion is to look at working these into the article and removing the "trivia" section. For example the song name checks - each song listed was a HUGE hit. Perhaps these should go under a "Legacy" heading - how is Harlow viewed since her death - what has been her lasing impact etc? Marilyn Monroe would be a great example to also use under this heading as she had acknowledged Harlow as one of her idols, and certainly a lot of Marilyn's style was inspired by her. That Harlow influenced arguably the most famous movie star of the century deserves to be discussed in the article, rather than included as trivia. (interesting snippet, and this truly is trivia.... both Harlow and Monroe had Clark Gable as their last leading man.) The other points could easily be incorporated into the article, and would make the article stronger at the same time. Rossrs 09:23, 23 April 2006 (UTC)

I'm re-writing the article in linear order. Once I finish the article (ending at her death) I will add new sections for her marriages and one for her legacy within the context of pop culture. PatrickJ83 20:11, 23 April 2006 (UTC)

The case of Paul Bern was reopened in 1960 to no avail.

The novel

I have created an article on the novel Today is Tonight which is credited to Harlow. Although I have a copy of this rare book all the information I have added here and in the novel's article is taken from the introduction. Any expansion regarding the novel itself and its history is welcome. If there is reputable proof that the book wasn't written by her, then this should of course be added where applicable. 23skidoo 23:48, 12 November 2006 (UTC)

Klieg Eye

An article in one of the early fan magazines claimed that Harlow suffered such a bad case of klieg eye (where looking into strong stage lights for too long burns the surface of the eye) during the filming of `Hells Angels' that she was forced to wear dark glasses for almost a year. No doubt this is sensational nonsense, but in the context of her other health issues, it would be interesting to know if it was true. Anyone else have any information? HOW COME THERES NO MENTION OF THE RIN TIN TIN LEGEND? EASILY THE MOST FASCINATING THING ABOUT HER! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.109.158.55 (talk) 20:00, 20 May 2008 (UTC)

Again - what? Ravenclaw (talk) 12:17, 16 September 2008 (UTC)

Per debate and discussion re: assessment of the approximate 100 top priority articles of the project, this article has been included as a top priority article. Wildhartlivie (talk) 05:46, 1 March 2008 (UTC)

Spelling of Surname

I swear I'd read that her name was "Carpentier". Can someone please clear this up, or at least bring to light the misunderstanding?? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 96.42.44.202 (talk) 22:29, 30 December 2008 (UTC)

According to Harlow's biographer Golden, the studio (not specified which one) used Carpentier in their press releases because it sounded better. Carpenter is the correct spelling, though. I have added a note on this in the article. KatherineK (talk) 29 September 2009

Music

She was menation in:

  • Kim Carnes - "Bette Davis Eyes" (1981.): "Her hair is HARLOW gold...
  • Madonna - "Vogue" (1990): HARLOW JEAN picture of the beauty quenn —Preceding unsigned comment added by 161.53.215.136 (talk) 04:27, 12 January 2010 (UTC)
Your point? This qualifies as trivia and per WP:TRIVIA, such sections are discouraged and should not be started where they do not currently exist. Wildhartlivie (talk) 04:34, 12 January 2010 (UTC)
Not really, it shows that she is part of the pop culture. Alecsdaniel (talk) 21:50, 3 July 2010 (UTC)

Second marriage?

Harlow was indeed married twice, not just once, as the article currently states. According to these Google results: here and here. Red Dust isn't even mentioned in the article. Estheroliver (talk) 18:36, 3 March 2011 (UTC)

JeanHarlow.com

The site JeanHarlow.com was referred as belonging to the estate of Jean Harlow when this article was created on 11 August 2003 but now there is no such a mention. See: http://web.archive.org/web/20030806054123/http://www.jeanharlow.com/ for the archived version of the site as it appeared at the date of creation of this article. "Blonde Bombshell"

It is popularly believed today (and may be found in many books) that she was nicknamed so after the film "Bombshell". However one book [1] claims that she was actually called so already in 1932. And that Bombshell was actually a "transparently autobiographical" film, the latter suggesting that the choice of the film title was after her nickname, not vice versa. Any additional evidence to this? It would be nice if wikipedia clarifies this culturally notable trivia. Staszek Lem (talk) 00:15, 4 May 2012 (UTC)

Then she was starring in a movie called Bombshell and received a nickname and she had similar things with the role that totally enhanced it. Now we know she garnered more similarities including her third marriage, not true at time of filming, so many current authors (2012 and on) draw more parallels then there were in 1932. It would burden the article to try and dismiss after raising these, in my opinion. The films scriptwriters were John Lee Mahin and Jules Furthman if more research is wanted. Allusions to Victor Fleming, the director having a hand too. Jennablurrs7575 (talk) 23:21, 17 January 2019 (UTC)

Who doubled as Jean Harlow after she died?

This Wikipedia article mentions 3 doubles, nonames given. A YouTube entry, primarily about "fake Shemp" (continuing the Shemp character in 4 posthumous episodes) named Mary Dees as a double in the above-mentioned Harlow situation. Carlm0404 (talk) 00:48, 2 October 2020 (UTC)

Good point, and it has been corrected.Jennablurrs7575 (talk) 01:34, 2 October 2020 (UTC)
