What does this mean?

[edit]

When it says of one of his engravings, "after so and so", what does this mean, exactly? Unschool (talk) 02:48, 11 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It means that the engraver tried to exactly copy an oil painting onto a plate. The oil painting that he is working from, or the artist who made that painting, is the work (or the artist) that the plate is "after". Raymondwinn (talk) 21:13, 9 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
