Liberty facilities?[edit]
Non native speaker here. What exactly is a liberty facility? Could you link or explain it? Google and some dictionary sites were not very helpful. -- 92.226.88.163 (talk) 18:58, 10 January 2013 (UTC)
- A liberty facility is a building or area designated to relaxing, eating, or generally doing something not work-related. In this particular case, the liberty facility in Jebel Ali is a group of buildings, some shops, some restaurants and food stalls, around a paved open area with chairs, tables, and an overhead canopy. It's situated inside the guarded area of the pier, and accessible to the personnel from the ship without having to go through any serious security. Not all liberty facilities will have everything here, some might just have an open area with chairs and tables, and perhaps a vending machine or two. blackbird_4 06:54, 16 January 2013 (UTC)
- I wondered the same. Would this be a place where items like beer, bacon, Playboy magazines, cough syrup (and other items not likely to be permitted in a Muslim environment) are sold? - No "working" women. The only people inside this area would be either servicemembers of whatever ship ported there and the people who are employed by the vendors there. So, Navy/Marines personnel and kiosk workers. As far as what is sold, the Navy would not allow anything like Playboys from being sold, and I seem to remember the food items that were normally pork here in the States being beef there. So, while there's no reason pork couldn't be sold there, since they're using local branches of restaurants, they would be selling whatever is normally sold in Dubai. The entire area of the liberty facilities only covers an area of maybe 800 by 1000 feet (240 by 300 meters), of which not all of it is inside the security perimeter. I honestly don't remember if there was beer there, as I don't drink it.--Blackbird_4 08:41, 14 September 2014 (UTC)
