Awards and decorations[edit]

It would be swell if we could find out what kind of awards and decorations he's received so we could plug them into the article. If we can zoom in to his official photo, that would do it, too. Any suggestions? --ScreaminEagle 17:27, 5 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Nevermind, I blew up the photo of his ribbon rack and I think I have all of them. The number of OLCs is questionable since the photo gets grainy the closer you zoom in of course, plus his lapel hides part of his ribbons, but I think it's as close as can be without an official list. Also, does anybody know what the gold background behind his Air Assault Badge is for? And I'm guessing he has the Army Aviator Badge as opposed to the Army Aviation Badge. The backing to an Airborne or Air Assault is not an award, but rather the unit one is serving in at the time. In this case, gold is the colour of the command group for the division. Other backings exist with various colours based on the unit, namely brigade-level. And I'm quite certain he has the aviator badge as General Schloesser was an aviator, flying Hueys in his early days and later specializing in Little Birds and Chinooks with the 160th SOAR Nightstalkers.--SOCL 19:51, 5 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

And I figured it was probably the Aviator Badge if for no other reason than it is awarded to officers and the Aviation Badge is only very rarely awarded to anyone other than enlisted. Schloesser's Lack of Vietnam Experience[edit]

He probably entered college in 1972, so he was very close in age to those of us who were drafted and sent to Vietnam. But Schloesser probably had a high enough lottery number to allow him to attend college from 1972-76 and then enlist and go to OCS. Had he simply enlisted and gone to Vietnam, the experience would have been invaluable in his career because America now has an entire corps of senior officers who have never served as low ranking officers in combat themselves. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.44.147.202 (talk) 14:27, 19 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The majority of today's senior leaders do not have Vietnam experience, as they are of a different generation. This generation, including Schloesser, will be marked by serving in combat in Haiti, Albania, Kosovo, Iraq, and Afghanistan. They carry lessons from each, just as Vietnam era Soldiers did.
