Possible Attacker Supporting Evidence Opposing Evidence
Russia The last show to feature a small town adjusting to a nuclear attack was The Day After, when most Americans assumed a nuclear attack would be from Russia (then Soviet Union). Russia matches China with the number of nuclear warheads, and again, the attackers would have to have plenty to attack so many US cities. Relations have warmed since the Cold War, but the tension is still there. And wasn't that website in Russian??

Colonel Stanislav Lunev is author of the book, “Through the Eyes of the Enemy”, and states the following:

1. The likely plan does not include use of missiles first. First the Russians would use their special operation forces, special troops, inside of the United States to destroy targets like communications facilities, airfields, command centers, and other targets that might be difficult to destroy with a missile attack.

Suitcase nuclear bombs at strategic locations are just one small part of their arsenal. I mentioned this in my book and I have been so surprised that the American public is so interested in this. Why? This is not something unusual for Russian military plans.

2.The Soviet plan was the use of strategic forces to destroy strategic targets in America and the West, followed by the use of nuclear and conventional forces. This was the Soviet way, and the Russian military still thinks the same way today. They are much more dangerous now because the Russian military is relying more on their nuclear weapons.

3.The likely plan does not include use of missiles first. First the Russians would use their special operation forces, special troops, inside of the United States to destroy targets like communications facilities, airfields, command centers, and other targets that might be difficult to destroy with a missile attack

4. The Russian conventional forces are not in a state of readiness. Their rocket and nuclear forces are. This war scenario could be in place by the request of Russian government in a short time. B-1B SAC 09:44, 25 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
*Silos in Russia are not very well-guarded

It would be pretty uncreative to find out that the big secret is Russia attacked us. The impact, (pardon the pun), would have been much stronger 25 years ago.

* Russia has about 700-800 available strategic warheads but would be most unlikely to waste a warhead on Denver or Atlanta before they had taken care of the US strategic forces first (ICBM silos and bases housing B-52s, B-1s and B-2s).B-1B SAC 07:18, 25 October 2006 (UTC). Chinese China is not exactly an ally, and has threatened to retaliate if America supports Taiwan's independence. China is a major nuclear player, and the one who attacked must have had many nuclear weapons. Then there is the odd coincidence of the only news broadcast showing the nuclear attacks being Chinese. Also, the retaliatory missles near Jericho would most likely be lauched to an advesary in the West. Finally, the airdrop had leaflets that featured a Chinese family and said DO NOT FIGHT China and the US are co-dependent on each other for trade, exports, labor, and financing of debt. Although we are not allies, we are also not exactly enemies. Also, from a practical perspective, CBS most likely would not want to insult China by suggesting they would attack us.

* China has fewer available warheads than Russia and even fewer ICBMs capable of reaching let along hitting the USA. Dbromage 08:10, 24 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Terrorists (Al Qaeda, et al.) The fact that this is an "invisible" enemy that launched a massive, reckless attack with no warning or regard to the innocent is the terrorist's MO. This show, in fact, presents what amounts to a terrorist's grand dream. Terror groups are the number one threat to this nation, and the number one fear of our population--replacing the Soviet threat of decades ago. Finally, the writers also wouldn't have to worry about offending relations with these sickos.

* The depictions and descriptions of the mushroom clouds suggest relatively low yield (tens of kilotons) ground bursts, possibly suggesting the weapons were placed there (e.g. "suitcase nukes") rather than delivered by missiles. Also in the pilot episode there were references to the President addressing Congress about "growing violence in the world" which could suggest terrorism. Dbromage 08:10, 24 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Terror groups simply don't have the resources (missile delivery systems, airforces, etc.), much less the nuclear capability, to launch a massive nuclear attack on most major US cities simultaneously. Even if this was not an aerial attack, transporting powerful nuclear devices throughout the nation undetected is highly improbable. The most famous terrorist attacks have a common thread: low-tech weapons, conventional explosives, and for the most part, localized.
North Korea Crazy dictator, check. Nuclear capability, check. Hates America, check. Also, the action is supposed to take place in 2009, so we do not know how much Korea's nuclear program would develop till then. At most, they have eight weapons that haven't really been tested. Unless something major happens, that isn't going to change in the next few years.

* Even if North Korea was able to strike the Pacific North West (which they are, at least theoretically, capable of doing) they don't have any missiles with the range to reach Atlanta. Dbromage 08:10, 24 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Iran See above. Less of a chance than North Korea--doesn't even have one nuke yet.
US government How could someone launch such a vicous, coordinated attack all over the US without a hint of what is coming. Don't we spend billions every year on Defense and have the most advanced satellite system in the world? UNLESS....
Maybe the government wanted to justify an attack on an advesary, maybe its conducting a horrible experiment, or maybe the administration in 2009 is crrrazy.
It would take some real creative writing to pull this scenario off.
Pakistan/China + Terrorists Terrorists have the will to make such an attack, but not the means. An Islamic country such as Pakistan or a US rival such as China could supply one or two dozen weapons to Terrorists to deploy via containers or commercial cargo jets.

We have to take in consideration that the bombing attempt in New York City was in a rental truck, not delivered by a missile, which leads credence to the theories not involving nations. However, the high altitude emp suggests a group with an advanced delivery system is responsible. Srt252 02:36, 9 November 2006

Complicated & this assumes a country with sufficient nukes would hand them over to someone else and risk having them used on themsleves, or get caught for doing it.
Domestically based attacks Since the series appears to be based in 2009, some event or chain of events could have brought on internal revolt which could have been linked with external forces. This type of attack could result in greatly limited initial response to nuclear detonations (as opposed to a retalliation which would have occurred much sooner if another nation was the primary agressor). If the attacks were from a domestic resistance group access to nuclear materials could prove easier with the infiltration of resitance fighters into the military. Additionally, coordination of attacks would prove less complicated if the parties involved were familiar with their targets. This type of attack would provoke much suspicion internally and could leave the country in a state of chaos almost indefinitely. --Wootonius 15:39, 24 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
*Episode 7 of Countdown seems to suggest a domestic agency of some sort is responsible. The 11th episode of the season suggested that Hawkins was involved, and tried to get out.
At this time this scenario would be relatively unlikely but due to the time lapse, some event or events could have brought about internal rebellion. Also, the US military and government have taken great care to ensure that access to restricted (in this case nuclear) material is highly restricted and obtaining these items from the US in an unauthorized fashion is highly difficult.
Military Coup A small faction high up in the military decides to pull a Seven Days in May. Wishing to take over the country, they set off nukes in several cities and claim it's a massive terrorist attack. They either take out the leadership or move them to a secure cut off location and claim the president is saying anything they want him to. They can declare martial law if they want to or impose whatever control they want, because they are defending us from terrorists! A nuclear retaliation against North Korea or Iran or whoever is launched as part of the terrorist attack cover story.

*Hawkins in Episode 6 was confronted by his daughter that they moved to Jericho with a heavy arsenal and an EMP-proof laptop because he knew the attack was coming.

It's a stretch to assume the US military would nuke it's own cities in a power grab. It would have to be a high-level group to have access to the nukes and codes.
Israel Widely believed to have an extensive nuclear arsenal. Also believed to have both land-based and sub-based missiles to deliver nuclear payloads. Perhaps hinted at by the name of the town, which mirrors the name of the Israeli MRBM (Jericho).199.79.222.119 17:22, 24 October 2006 (UTC)[reply] Currently our ally, and relies on the US for much of its military equipment. Also relies on UN involvement in local skirmishes with its Middle East neighbors.199.79.222.119 17:22, 24 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Scientologists Angered by the depictions and assertions of their religion by many many many people as being a "scam" and "batsh*t insane," Scientologists have not been above kidnapping, torture, corporate espionage, raiding of government files, and frivolous lawsuits to silence their detractors. Who's to say they'd be above a nuclear terrorist attack?199.79.222.119 16:26, 24 October 2006 (UTC)[reply] Although, as they say, money talks, even the insane amounts of money at the Scientologists' disposal couldn't purchase enough warheads to carry out the attacks. Also, the Scientologists' "base" city is Los Angeles, which is shown on the map in the Chinese broadcast as having been attacked.199.79.222.119 16:26, 24 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

*I don't think CBS would want to face their lawsuit wrath either. Please be advised that we are suing everyone reading this section of the page, and yes, we have your IP addresses traced. Thank you - L. Ron Hubbard 06:27, 30 October 2006 (UTC)

Western Nation It would be a twist to have a Western nation be the attacker. We would not be focusing our technology and intelligence on a nation we view as a non-threat, which would explain why it would have been a surprise. In the book "1984", it was England who attacked us. It would be pretty implausible.
US was not really attacked To be attacked by that magnitude without any warning is very unrealistic--unless there was no attack. This could all be a bizzare experiment of some sort. No one knows for sure that all of those cities are actually destroyed. This type of story has been done before in shows such as the Twilight Zone. To cut off an entire town is logistically improbable, not to mention the fact that we know ONE nuclear bomb was detonated near the proximity of Denver because everyone saw it. I can't fathom a good enough reason to invest the tremendous amount of time, money, and effort into such an experiment (there are more practical ways to see how a town reacts to a nuclear attack). It would take one hell of a good writer to come close to getting this scenario plausible.
Cuba Enemy of US government who is known to support terrorist organizations. There was a similar scenario in a previous attack movie: Red Dawn. Cuba is watched very closely and the Cuban population here overwhelmingly hates the current regime. The current regime is also more concerned with keeping power than trying to pull off any attack.
Venezuela Former ally is now led by Castro disciple, Hugo Chavez. He is crazy. His contempt for the Bush regime is legendary, and has a lot of money with oil reserves. This show takes place after the Bush administration leaves office (2009). Although his contempt for people in our government is well known, he has consistenly made a public relations ploy to appeal to the poor in this country by trying to send free heating oil and making public appearances with supporting celebrities (Belafonte, Glover, etc.) Plus, his nation has no nuclear weapons.
United Nations / Multiple Nations What about an China-India-Russia Coalition aimed at bringing the international balance of power back to order. People say Hawkins has an Indian Dharma Tatoo on his arm, thats why I say India too. What about an China-India-Russia Coalition aimed at bringing the international balance of power back to order. People say Hawkins has an Indian Dharma Tatoo on his arm, thats why I say India too. And who is this Kenchy Duewahlia doctor guy. It's like he is getting plastered just before he knows he is going to die...that is die by means of terrorist attack. Who knows?208.254.193.190 15:41, 5 December 2006 (UTC) In the coming years, it is possible that due the War on Terrorism, America begins to question other countries, such as Russia, Turkey, India, etc. The UN see's that if nothing is done, the world economy could collapse, and/or America could become too powerful and become much like Big Brother to other nations, therefore the UN decides to destroy or impair the United States to prevent something like Russia being invaded, which would ultimently start a World War. However, using mass armies and high technology would give away who committed the attack, therefore they used rental trucks filled with nukes, not only to disclose the attacks, but to make it look like a act of terrorism, leaving out the UN as a suspect..--The Avian Flu 23:16, 30 November 2006 (UTC)[reply] The UN is not known for taking strong stances. The most a horrid dictator can expect is normally a strongly worded letter of disapproval. Even if they could cook something like this up, being the ultimate bueracracy, it is unlikely they could pull something like this off with so many different and bickering nations. More likely that a couple of nations would ally themselves to take us down, but again, that type of coordination between, say, China and Russia and India is very unlikely---besides pulling off that type of operation with no one knowing, the fact is that these nations, although distrustful of the US, don't really trust each other either.
Other Nations, but US is the Bad Guy Maybe the USA wasn't attacked first - maybe the US attacked another country first and that country retailated. Perhaps the US are the bad guys.—Preceding unsigned comment added by Griffinpaul (talkcontribs) 20:45, 11 November 2006 Also, the food drop isn't FROM the Chinese, it was FOR the Chinese. That is why the boxes were filled with Chinese goods but used US MILITARY parachutes. Often, we feed the countries we bomb. This really isn't a theory of who attacked, but rather a justification. See opposing evidence for CHINA and RUSSIA.
The Cylons Cylon (re-imagining)

The Cylons have been known to use nukes to commit genicide. The The Destruction of the Twelve Colonies Twelve Colonies of Kobol happened in a somewhat similar fashion. It is also possible that the Cylons know the location of Earth.--158.123.153.254 15:31, 10 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This is perhaps unlikely as scientologists. All of this refers to the Battlestar Galactica (re-imagining) by the way. --158.123.153.254 15:31, 10 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
