1870 or so

[edit]

There were multiple Jersey City clubs in the NABBP "by 1870". Which one? By 1885 when Jersey City joined the Eastern League, such affiliation implied exclusive territory. If that club was identical to or descended from a particular NABBP member in Jersey City, then the particular 1870 club should be identified and the descent asserted, at least.

No Jersey City club fielded a strong team, much less amateur champion in 1869 or 1870, the two seasons with official amateur/professional distinction. So I have cut the claim to win one NABBP amateur championship "by 1870", the association's last season. Amateur champion so early as 1872 is possible but the successor amateur association (NAABBP, established 1871) is unknown today, after its first year. Does anyone here know about it, or about a Jersey City club success?

Marshall Wright lists one Jersey City club for 1870 under the name "Champion" as in Champion Base Ball Club (for example). Maybe it won a local or regional title. Maybe author misinterpreted the name.
