Feminist?

[edit]

Jo Brand (born 3 May 1957) is a British feminist comedian.

I'm just wondering what justuification there could be for calling JB a "feminist" comedian? Flapdragon 22:47, 15 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Well... she is a woman! And maybe her interest are feminism. Remove the link if you disagree, however; if you want to! Kilo-Lima Vous pouvez parler 15:18, 5 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I was just wondering the exact same thing. As far as I can see, the feminist tag comes purely from the way she looked durng her early career. Speaking as a more-than-averagely sexist man, who has heard her material over the years, and seen her live once, I'm sure that if she were a real feminist she would have said something by now that I could take issue with. Most of the so-called feminist material in her act is in the set-up of the jokes – and is punctured by the punchline. In fact, men are less likely to be the targets of her jokes than women (particularly herself), and her 'anti-men' jokes are usually gentler than typical male 'anti-women' jokes. So, as there doesn't seem to be a strong feeling here that Jo is a feminist comedian, I shall remove the word from the article. Grant 13:13, 17 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Related to the above, and just as a comment, her early shows were often notable for very hostile receptions from men 155.136.80.160 11:06, 4 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I have taken off the external link because I don't believe that Wikipedia should be advertising. I dont think the link is of benefit to someone wanting to research into Jo Brand.

Proposed removal of the The Apprentice UK template

[edit]

I have started a discussion at Template talk:The Apprentice UK proposing the removal of template {{The Apprentice UK}} from this article (and the articles on other celebrities having appeared in the show). Please contribute your opinions to a discussion there. UkPaolo/talk 10:07, 10 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Husband

Who is her spouse? Anish Raja or Bernie Bourke? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.10.74.170 (talk) 08:34, 14 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Bourke. Jim Michael (talk) 21:54, 31 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Picture

[edit]

Surely there can be a better picture than a fuzzy shadowy one of Jo Brand for the start of the article? Pechark (talk) 21:48, 17 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Countryfile

[edit]

Didn't she judge viewers' photographs for Countryfile's calendar a couple of years back? Anyone know which year this was? ~dom Kaos~ (talk) 12:32, 9 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Birthday

[edit]

Jo's birthday has been widely reported (mostly online) as 3 May 1957 for about 5 years or so. However, Jo has revealed in her recently published memoir "Look Back in Hunger" that she was born 23 July 1957. I remember first seeing the 3 May date on Wikipedia in around 2004, but it would seem this is a nonsense that has unfortunately been spread across the internet. Hopefully we can now start spreading the correct date. Crisso (talk) 18:33, 3 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Sister of John Sergeant?

[edit]

On the "Flora and Fauna" edition of QI (the XL version) in 2009, Fry calls attention to the similarity between Brand and Sergeant who were sitting next to each other. Sergeant says "well we are brother and sister" and they move on without further comment. I take it this was a joke, but it wasn't exactly clear.Gusssss (talk) 14:53, 9 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

They aren't. Rodhullandemu 15:00, 9 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Well if anything she would be a SISTER to John Sergeant, at least! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.128.194.85 (talk) 19:05, 21 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Ahem. I wondered who would be first to spot that. Gusssss (talk) 20:25, 31 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The Great British Bake Off: An Extra Slice

[edit]

This article talks about The Great British Bake Off: An Extra Slice and says a fourth series was presented in 2017. It can now be updated and say that a fifth series has been presented in 2018. Vorbee (talk) 17:50, 5 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The News Quiz

[edit]

Jo Brand stood in for Miles Jupp as a guest presenter of The News Quiz on October 5 2018. This could be mentioned in the article. Vorbee (talk) 19:18, 5 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Quiz called W.I.Q.

[edit]

Am I right in thinking that Jo Brand was the host of a radio quiz on BBC Radio Four called "W.I.Q." in December 2018? If so, this could be mentioned in the article. Vorbee (talk) 19:41, 17 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Place of birth

[edit]

Thanks, User:Crisso for correcting place of birth. Does she say which part of the Wandsworth Road? It extends from near Clapham up as far as Vauxhall. Can we assume Wandsworth Road = London Borough of Wandsworth? Did you want to add a page number for that autobiography source? Many thanks. Martinevans123 (talk) 18:09, 10 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Brand doesn't state specifically which part of WR so I did simply add London Borough of Wandsworth as her POB. I only have the Google books version to hand which doesn't list the page numbers but if I do get a physical copy in front of me then I am happy to add the specific pages (if anyone else has the book please feel free to do so!). Crisso (talk) 18:35, 10 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. It wouldn't be so bad if we had an article on WR. We can't really pipe to A3036 road as that makes it even more imprecise. Perhaps another source can be found that pins it down. Martinevans123 (talk) 18:54, 10 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Battery acid

[edit]

I initially thought this was contrary to WP:NOTNEWS, but with the BBC, Theresa May, the Metropolitan Police Service and the Milkshake King all publicly involved I'm really not so sure. Martinevans123 (talk) 22:11, 13 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

It's inescapably news now, and the BBC have edited the comment out of the repeats / catch-ups. JezGrove (talk) 22:38, 13 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, what a relief we can no longer use the primary source here. Martinevans123 (talk) 22:50, 13 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Lmao. Ofcourse it's news, in true fascist fashion she literally encouraged people to assault someone with acid because she didn't like their political views, and to make it worse, the BBC defended her 'joke', yet when Marcus Meechan made a joke at the expense of the Nazis he was purposely taken literally and branded 'far right' by the BBC. Not only is this major news but I think you people who control what's allowed on Wikipedia really need a serious rethink on accepting the BBC as a credible source2A00:23C4:E0B1:8101:A953:912C:F051:5035 (talk) 12:35, 14 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
It was a joke, in however much bad taste, as part of comedy programme. This article should just report the facts, based on reliable sources, without any editorial comment. That's currently what it does. Martinevans123 (talk) 12:44, 14 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I note that although the BBC has cut the remarks from any future broadcasts of the show, news outlets such as the Evening Standard, which is currently used as a source in this article, have republished them. This seems somewhat irresponsible. There may be a case for using only sources which do not include the clip. Martinevans123 (talk) 12:48, 14 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Film

[edit]

It appears that her book will indeed be a film, but, she will not star. https://www.amazon.com/More-You-Ignore-Me-ebook/dp/B00GW4RT2A?ref_=ast_author_dp 67.249.81.123 (talk) 23:53, 22 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
