discussion of sources for Burckhardt's official position from 1807

[edit]

The current article text is in error, Burckhardt was not director of the Paris Observatory: this is confirmed by the Paris observatory's own website, which says that it was Delambre who held that post (from the death of Mechain in 1804 until his own death in 1822, when he was succeeded by Bouvard). German Wikipedia's article on Burckhardt identifies the post held by Burckhardt as "astronomer at the military school in Paris" (but does not cite an external source), and says he was appointed after the death of the post's previous holder, Lalande, in 1807. But Lalande's position has been differently described elsewhere as "the chair of astronomy in the Collège de France". An interim editing-revision has been inserted, for use until a better external source can be found, to remove the clearly erroneous information, and adding/retaining for the time being only those elements common to the other Wikipedia entries.
