I cannot see any proof for J.S. having committed suicide. Should be added! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.166.115.56 (talkcontribs) Happolati

A proper source is still missing. Wikipedia is not part of the yellow press. Facts only, no speculation please! --Happolati 16:55, 17 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Dagens Nyheter is not "yellow press". This is what Dagens Nyheter's editorial says today (17 feb): "Var det det tuffa tempot i filmbranschen? Var det upplevelsen av tsunamin i Thailand 2004? Var det kraven Johanna Sällström ställde på sig själv? Eller vad var det annars som ledde till att hon tog sitt liv?" (I assume most of the editors on this article knows Swedish.) - Bronks 18:04, 17 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It's still only SPECULATION. And THAT'S yellow press! Mind the question marks. --Happolati 18:18, 17 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The question marks are about why she committed suicide, not if... Bronks 18:39, 17 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

We still don't have an official declaration that JS committed suicide, for example by the police. It's still a journalist's speculation - and badly done by Dagens Nyheter, to put it mildly. --Happolati 01:22, 18 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:Johanna sallstrom.jpg

[edit]

Image:Johanna sallstrom.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

The image was restored today (and if it had not been it would shortly have been deleted by a bot) but as far as I can see the complaint from User:BetacommandBot still hasn't been dealt with. The fair use rationale has to have a section explaining its purpose at every article where it's used.--Old Moonraker (talk) 13:14, 13 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
And there is no fair use rationale for using it in this article. The poster is obviously not used for critical commentary of the film. I can't see any possibility for fair use in this article at all. --Reign of Toads  08:37, 14 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Reliability?

[edit]

Much of what is contained in this article is unsubstantiated. There are very few references, and the four that are there all come from 2 tabloid newspapers! Not seen as a reliable source by many people. I feel that to claim she committed suicide without proper referencing is distasteful, furthermore to speculate as to why she did it without substantiation is simply morbid. I hope that out of respect for her family that Wikipedia work to rectify this.

The clinging to a tree trope

[edit]

In the past I've removed the statement (albeit found in third-party sources) that she survived the tsunami by clinging to a tree. I did not find that statement in any of the Swedish articles about her, including ones that interviewed her about the event, and I suspect that the ones in English may have taken the information from the Wikipedia article. Please see this diff [1]. It would be best to say that some sources claim this. I honestly don't think it is true. LaMona (talk) 20:43, 18 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

The source is the Guardian which should be reliable. But, sure, we could rephrase it. --regentspark (comment) 21:31, 18 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I know the source. But I'm saying that even the Guardian at times prints things that aren't true, and this one, given that no Swedish sources that interview her say this, is dubious. The Swedish sources say that she went to "higher ground" - but you would think that if she had clung to a tree that would be dramatic enough for them to include it. I'll see if I can hedge the language a bit. LaMona (talk) 22:26, 18 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Here's a translation of what she says to a Swedish newspaper: "Together with her daughter and younger brother were Johanna Sällström in Koh Lanta when the tsunami on 26 December 2004. They were forced to escape the wave, up in the mountains. "I remember it was so quiet," she told Tove. "The birds fell silent. We humans sat high, high up in the jungle, waiting for a second wave." [2] You can see why I'm skeptical about the "clinging to a tree" bit. LaMona (talk) 22:45, 18 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm. That does add a certain level of dubiousness. OK. Let's get rid of it. On reflection, the picture of clinging to a tree with one hand and a child with the other does seem a tad far-fetched. --regentspark (comment) 23:08, 18 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Henning Mankell

[edit]

This article claims Mankell was feeling guilty over her death. Why? I doubt "guilt" was involved, but if he did something to cause it, it needs to be included here.Abitslow (talk) 23:44, 22 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

That is what the Guardian article says, although it doesn't explain it. We could attribute "grief and guilt" to the Guardian, or leave off the guilt. I note that the article repeats the (AFAIK) unfounded story about her clinging to a tree during the tsunami, so it's a less than stellar source. Do the edit if you wish - I wouldn't revert it.
