Not German, not Estonian

[edit]

Hau was a subject of the Russian Empire. He was not ethnically Estonian. He is called "Baltic-German", although this seems odd because he was not born in the Baltic region. I guess if we assume all ethnic Germans who ever lived there are Baltic-German it works. He was born in the Duchy of Schleswig. At the time it was under the control of Denmark. It was not within the Holy Roman Empire. This is not Swedish Pomerania which was both under Swedish control but still in the Holy Roman Empire. The empire ended on the border of Schleswig. So he was never a German national. His painting seems to have all been done after he went to Russia so I think we can just avoid categorizing him by the painting he did while a subject of Schleswig.John Pack Lambert (talk) 18:31, 20 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
