WP:COMMONNAME applies[edit]

WP:COMMONNAME applies to the title of this article, which is "John-Nhan Tran" based on a consensus of English-language sources. This is how Tran is named in the press and in typical Church-related reporting. Since that is his common name, it stands to reason that we do not derogate from it inside the article. The article title should match the name we use to refer to Tran throughout enwiki, especially his own article. There is no reason other than some misplaced Vietnamese nativism or triumphalism that diacritics and an extended native name should be used, other than as an example or a one-time mention as full name/birth name as appropriate. Tran should be referred throughout this article as "John-Nhan Tran" (and "Tran" only, per WP:SURNAME). Elizium23 (talk) 21:28, 27 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Full Name[edit]

Just got an email back from Bishop-elect Tran. In English his name is John Nhan Van Tran. In Vietnamese it is Tran Van Nhan. I'll change the name of the article to John Nhan Van Tran. Roberto221 (talk) 18:55, 9 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Emails are not WP:RS Elizium23 (talk) 21:12, 9 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Regardless of the sourcing of this, which I believe violates WP:RS, it's generally inconsequential. The reporting of the bishop-elect has set a clear consensus as to how English-speakers refer to him WP:COMMONNAME. If you'd really like to add his English-equivalent middle name to the article, find it in a reliable source, or wait until it's mentioned by one.

@Elizium23: @Maximilian775: Here's his phone #: 504-715-0096 and email:jtran@arch-no.org., straight out of the parish website, [1] I'm sure Fr. Tran can give you a reliable source. And you can explain to him the above. Tell him Roberto says Hello... Roberto221 (talk) 09:22, 10 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Please don't encourage that. We're not in the business of contacting people, especially public figures. We have plenty of methods to discover reliably published sources, especially for such Catholic clergy. Elizium23 (talk) 14:55, 10 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Regardless of the unhelpful sarcasm I'm detecting, if I was to do this, it would go against WP:NOR Maximilian775 (talk) 16:18, 10 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
