Regrets?

[edit]

I think I remember hearing on a Radio show a while ago that Costello later regretted the Republic's withdrawal from the Commonwealth, but I have no source for this. Has anyone heard that too? Ireland could, afterall, - constitutionally - easily have stayed within the Commonwealth as an independent republicin the late '40s and '50s like India did. 2 April 2006 KRC58 00:06, 2 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I am not sure it was Costello, i think it might have been deV who said it, also considering his grandson? has brought up the idea of returning to the Commonwealth. And i don't think they really withdrawed from the commonwealth, more like they let the membership lapse, which just happened to coincide with the proclamation of the republic. --Boothy443 | trácht ar 05:22, 2 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The toasts

[edit]

This had a bad link and seems illogical - "What is certain is that an agreement about toasts to both the King (symbolising Canada) and the President (representing Ireland) was broken and only a loyal toast to the King was offered, to the fury of the Irish delegation." I say illogical because he himself could have proposed a toast to the President anyway; this sort of thing happens all the time.Red Hurley (talk) 19:45, 11 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Catholic first?

[edit]

I just undid a revision about a quote about being catholic first, Irish second, based on this: http://books.google.de/books?id=AkmrAAAAIAAJ&pg=PA103&dq=%22I+am+an+Irishman+second%22+costello+%22without+qualification%22&hl=en&sa=X&ei=dF1qU9GzI4jkOte1gXg&ved=0CDsQ6AEwAA#v=onepage&q=%22I%20am%20an%20Irishman%20second%22%20costello%20%22without%20qualification%22&f=false but after reviewing the linked source, I'm not so sure anymore. Will check later if I remember. --Slashme (talk) 16:26, 7 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
