"He continues to be active in The Vanguard Group"[edit]

I don't think this is right. It's not completely clear. He is president of the "Bogle Financial Markets Research Center" which is located on the Vanguard campus and funded by Vanguard, and Vanguard's website calls it "Vanguard's Bogle Financial Markets Research Center." A modest part of the Vanguard website hosts a number of papers, articles, and lists of books. Bogle has been a prolific writer of books and articles since stepping down as Senior Chairman of Vanguard in 2000. I don't know how many employees the Bogle Financial Markets Research Center has, but I have the impression it's a relative handful of assistants who help him gather data and statistics for his books. I don't believe he plays any role at all in the day-to-day management decisions of the mutual funds that comprise The Vanguard Group. I don't have good enough sources to put any of this in the article, but I'll be trying to see what I can come up with.Dpbsmith (talk) 01:43, 21 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Not the first index fund[edit]

I've edited it to say "the first index fund available to the general public." Origins notes that "John McQuown and David G. Booth at Wells Fargo and Rex Sinquefield at American National Bank in Chicago both established the first Standard and Poor's Composite Index Funds in 1973. Both of these funds were established for institutional clients; individual investors were excluded." Unfortunately it doesn't cite sources and I don't have time to look for sources right now, but intend to add them. Dpbsmith (talk) 01:48, 21 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

John C. Bogle[edit]

I believe this article should be under John C. Bogle and that John Bogle should be the redirect. Two reasons would be:

"John C. Bogle" is the way his name is presented in all the books he has authored;
"John C. Bogle" is the way his name is presented in his own blog, The Bogle eBlog.

Wealth and philanthropy[edit]

I am not sure that a Business Insider reference is the best choice. There are too many complaints about this site using clickbait techniques and prioritizing publishing speed over accuracy. According to the AARP magazine, Bogle has forgone an estimated $28 billion of personal wealth by operating Vanguard as an investor-owned coop, and in the interview Bogle says he's comfortable with that. Hmm. Not the best source, maybe.... Well, a bit of googling doesn't turn up corrobation, but this net worth is awfully low. Reread the interview more carefully. The interviewer says "someone has estimated" the $28 billion guess, which I take to mean "I found it on the internet somewhere." Note the obvious logical flaw: if $billions were going into Bogle's & Vanguard's pockets, that's billions less going into the accounts of their customers. Who then might have taken their business elsewhere. Still, that's the number we have in print, and Otter is a wiki-notable writer. FWTW. --Pete Tillman (talk) 19:21, 10 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Birth place conflict[edit]

I've seen some sources say Bogle was born in Verona, while others say he was born in Montclair. Is there any definitive answer? HapHaxion _{(talk / contribs)} 05:19, 17 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Interesting question. The Inquirer shows it as Verona while The NY Times says Montclair. On one hand, I’d like to say the Inquirer is correct since he’s a local guy. On the other, I think the Times would be superior on geography of northern Jersey. Was looking through the history of both and the answer isn’t clear. Verona Township looks like it was changed at one time to Cedar Grove as well so for all I know, he could have been born there. If he mentions in in an autobiography, I’d consider that to be authoritative. TastyPoutine ^{talk (if you dare)} 02:01, 18 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
