Painting authorship[edit]

Gwillhickers, thanks for creating this. I found another version of the painting in the infobox, credited to "Samuel Brown". This page says the painting was "executed in Rome". I think that means the painting was by Samuel (Appleton) Brown (Abbott) (Samuel Appleton Brown Abbott (Q109588087)), who was active in Rome as the first director of the American Academy in Rome, but it's conjectural. Based on your knowledge, would this make sense? AleatoryPonderings (???) (!!!) 17:18, 15 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@AleatoryPonderings: The image you've linked to indeed says that the painting is by Samuel Brown, however, the image in the article, which is a more clear image of Carter, is a rendered reproduction, but it's still Brown's work. In any case, I'd prefer to keep the existing image, but we can still say the painting is by Samuel Brown, which I intend to do directly. Thanks for looking out. -- Gwillhickers (talk) 17:30, 15 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Certainly wasn't suggesting replacing it—was just curious about the authorship. Now wondering whether I should create Samuel Appleton Brown Abbott. AleatoryPonderings (???) (!!!) 18:22, 15 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@AleatoryPonderings: Apparently painting wasn't Samuel's mainstay. There are articles here and here that places him in Rome, as a professor of architecture, but they don't say anything about his painting activity. It would be interesting to find out why Samuel came to paint Carter's portrait. -- Gwillhickers (talk) 18:51, 16 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I think they were distant relatives? [1] says Sam Abbott married into the family in 1873. I was also confused about why he did the painting—I think I read somewhere that he took painting classes while in Rome. Maybe this was part of his painting education? AleatoryPonderings (???) Creating a Shakespeare's Head Building Page[edit]

Would be a good idea to create a new page for the John Carter House (aka the Shakespeare's Head building) and garden instead of keeping it here? The Providence preservation society has some information about the house and Garden on their webpage and it seems important enough to merit its own page.
