Father[edit]

The information found in the will reference makes for an identification of Hammond Crosse with the High Sheriff of Bedfordshire (1703-1785), with the Verelst portrait. The will itself refers to two sons, Hammond the younger and Thomas. It does not refer to the Rev. John Crosse as a son.

This may have been deliberately "cutting him out" of the family: the Methodist sources indicate that there was friction between the father and son. The father provided for his clerical career, but did not pass on property.

In any case I have decided that this quirk doesn't cast serious doubt on the indication that Hammond Crosse "of Kensington", Hammond Crosse "of Islington" and the High Sheriff are the same person. It would be good to have better references to the family background, however. Charles Matthews (talk) 06:49, 15 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

There is a convincing account in http://www.lamas.org.uk/transactions-archive/Vol%2037.pdf on pp. 211-12. It gives three sons, with John being the youngest. A footnote talks about the will. Charles Matthews (talk) 07:09, 15 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
