Good work. Can you find stuff on "Flounder" and the rest of the crew?

http://www.allbookstores.com/browse/Author/Dolan%2C%20John and http://www.allbookstores.com/browse/Author/Dolan%2C%20John%20P. what's with the photo credits? is he a photographer too? Dsol 23:20, 9 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I think it's a middle initials thing. Look at the results of this search for example. I guess he's Dolan, John C? That's the credit on Slave, 1998 on page 2 anyway. Dsol 23:29, 9 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Fellows. John Carrol Dolan is married to Kathleen Dolan. Do note that. And a lot of his stuff is on the last link in the external links page.

He seems to have changed the way he writes his name throughout the years. I've seen it as John C. Dolan, John Carrol Dolan, John Dolan (more recently), etc. Brandoid (talk) 23:21, 16 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Merging

[edit]

I am not satisfied with the arguments here to justify merging Gary Brecher with John Dolan. Back to the grindstone. comment left by 64.166.237.10

I see no reason to merge. John Dolan is a real person, and is "of note" enough to have an article. Even if Gary Brecher is a alter ego of Dolan's, that character himself is probably MORE notable than Dolan and even MORE deserving of his own article :) --Fxer 07:59, 16 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

No need to merge here: Dolan is a stand alone, real live, actual person who likes to don, from time to time, particular personae--as do many authors, poets, writers, and other people of text. --Poetess 15:07, 20 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed. A reference, at most, would suffice. Brandoid (talk) 23:21, 16 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Needs updated

[edit]

Dolan hasn't teach at UVIC this year. http://web.uvic.ca/calendar2008/FACS/FoHu/DoEn/index.html

I believe he said he was fired in his recent article in the Exiled.

Also, The Exile is The Exiled now, and doesn't currently publish a newspaper. http://www.exiledonline.com

Merger

[edit]

Gary Brecher should be merged into this article. Brecher is a pen name of Dolan. Any objections? --RaiderAspect (talk) 04:36, 20 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@RaiderAspectIf they're the same person, yes, they should be merged. I suggest you do the merge yourself, as nobody else actually cares. (Correction: it seems from threads above that there are people who care. But it seems to me that Dolan's achievements are tiny - one novel, a few short stories, a few poems. The real discussion should over deletion.) PiCo (talk) 03:06, 24 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@PiCo What makes this guy exceptional (or notable, if you insist) is that he's the only author who doesnt write from a clear position of privilege, even though he has alluded to a very expensive doctorate. Coupled with in depth reporting (NAAK injectors in Kuwait, coral pools in East Timor, shopping centers in Najran, etc) on stuff you'll never see anywhere else, he causes a certain fringe apparently to literally just come unglued. It's a shame he can't seem to get paid for doing this. Erm, either. Not only that, what with Swirl Face, Richard Huckle and even Fred Frontier[[1]] and all this he puts an angle on the ESL industry I've never seen in the mainstream news. 55378008a (talk) 11:04, 10 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@55378008a: he sounds like a colourful character. Is the place he taught in Iraq the city that I'd call Sumaimania, in Kurdistan? I spent a night or two there once, in about 1997 - saw a few fights between the peacekeepers, who were far from peaceful. I doubt enough people care about this article to make a conversation possible, so I suggest you just go ahead as do as you think best, merger-wise. You can ask an admin to help with the technical details.PiCo (talk) 12:13, 10 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@PiCo From what I recollect, thats what it said. My memory retention is not what it used to be. Thanks, I was trotting it out as more of an idea but if I get around to it I'll get around to it. I spend more time these days mulling than doing. - 55378008a (talk) 14:18, 10 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Oppose - even if Dolan is Brecher, one is a person the other a character. Pretty straightforward that they should be separate. Volunteer Marek  01:06, 9 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Merge - Dolan is Brecher. He writes under the name, The War Nerd ("Gary Brecher is the War Nerd") for Pando Daily and is definitely not just a character.--FeralOink (talk) 17:11, 10 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Merge - Dolan is Brecher.  Infestor  TC 22:32, 24 October 2015 (UTC) [reply]

4 votes (including my own) FOR and one AGAINST. What to do now? Quis separabit? 03:12, 12 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Change - I think the article should be 'War Nerd' and Brecker and Dolan should redirect to it. As pointed out above, his internet presence is entirely under the guise of War Nerd, rarely Brecker. Please let me know if you want a new section for this. I'm pretty sick so I can't promise how fast I'll get around to it, but I can promise I'll get to it when I get to it, other circumstances permitting. 55378008a (talk) 11:04, 10 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Pando censorship dispute

[edit]

Might I inquire as to how other editors feel about adding a section on the 2015 PandoDaily paywall and allegations of censorship. Last time someone took issue and if I am not mistaken even oversighted/revdeleted the edit to make it look like it was made the next day after I typed a note to myself 3 weeks or months later. Just seemed a little wierd. Guy censoring it and saying it was speculation and all. Don't get me wrong, I love pigeons and dinosaurs too, I just don't go through reverting edits to them saying they're unsourced speculation. Besides, the lede says he wrote for Pando if thats speculation it should be removed too. 55378008a (talk) 10:44, 10 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

John Dolan has no fixed address - does anyone have public citation(s) that confirm this?

[edit]

This is a minor thing, but I wanted to fix the bit at the end of the Biography section where it states that Dolan has been recently living in Europe. This hasn't been true for at least several months. During taping of the last Radio War Nerd podcast episode I listened to (note that I'm way behind), Dolan was living in Malaysia, and at that time stated that he would be heading to the U.S. in the future. (For all I know he is in the U.S. now.)

Based on what I know, the only proper thing that can be said of Dolan's residence is that it has not been fixed in one place for years, nor should it be assumed he will be living in one place (semi-)permanently unless he declares so himself. As best as I can tell - at least before he achieved some commercial success with his recent book, as well as his RWN podcast - he and his partner have lived wherever acceptable employment opportunities become available. They've lived in a number of countries since departing the U.S. long ago.

If nothing else, I'll provide a temporary fix to the bio by noting Dolan's itinerant lifestyle as described above (though with much less verbosity), with a {citation needed} note attached to the sentence. But it would be best if someone had a link that could be appended to this information, ideally to a reference that is publicly available, as opposed to something behind a subscription paywall such as his podcast or a restricted-access publication. Of course, if such restricted-access references are the only thing available, they'll have to do, with the citation(s) noting the restricted status accordingly.

I'll check back periodically for any responses, and if there are none after a week or so, I'll go ahead and make the change as proposed above. Of course, anyone else is welcome to edit this bit on Dolan's residence as well. Thanks for your attention to this inquiry. Sharl928 (talk) 08:33, 16 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
