TV Career

You should add in his title role in the tv series "The Storyteller". 71.57.167.225 (talk) 11:21, 21 July 2006

Judgemental and unreferenced Who Do You Think You Are paragraph removed

I have removed the biased (to put it mildly) and unreferenced paragraph about Hurt's Who Do You Think You Are episode by anonymous user 67.171.206.153. The original paragraph was quite close to vandalism. I've added a sourced paragraph instead. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Epsilonpilot (talkcontribs) 07:57, 29 September 2007 (UTC)

Needs an image

The current image at the top was removed because it was a direct shot from V for Vandetta and as a non fair-use image cannot be used on any article except the one for the movie in question.

A fair-use image is nessecary though. FinalWish 02:22, 15 October 2007 (UTC)

The image Image:Sjff 03 img1147.jpg is used in this article under a claim of fair use, but it does not have an adequate explanation for why it meets the requirements for such images when used here. In particular, for each page the image is used on, it must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Please check

Hurt and Hurt

Anselm Hurt

About 20 years ago I met a gentleman called Anselm Hurt and I believe he said he was John's brother. He discussed John's early and sixth-form education fairly freely. The event was for graduates of Emmanuel College, Cambridge and Anselm was working for the Worker's Educational Association. I wonder whether the article is incomplete on John's siblings? Spoilers

"His character's demise in Alien is generally regarded as one of the most chilling and unforgettable deaths in cinematic history" in the introductory paragraph may well be true, but it's also a spoiler, is it not? I removed it once for that very reason, but it looks as if it's been restored.

Any thoughts on this? Is there some sort of guideline on posting spoilers that expressly allows for this?

It's an "old" movie, and a famous death scene, which might justify it, but that seems rather unconvincing.

Changed to "final scene", and added solid cites from reputable sources. 88.109.34.216 (talk) 15:52, 21 January 2010 (UTC)

Human Planet

Is this the John Hurt who has narrated Human Planet on BBC One in January 2011? This should be added to his list of television entries. ACEOREVIVED (talk) 19:57, 20 January 2011 (UTC)

Birth place

Hurt's birthplace has been changed back and forth between Shirebrook and Chesterfield a number of times on the article page.

Investigation suggests that Hurt's actual birthplace was Chesterfield, although after birth he then lived with his family in Shirebrook.

Hurt appeared on an episode of BBC One's The One Show on 2-Feb-2011. The programme would be available at http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00ybvzq, but regrettably although it is referred to there, it is not currently available for viewing.

On that programme, Hurt reportedly said that he was born at a nursing home, rather than at home. For example, see http://www.contactmusic.com/news/hurts-eldest-brother-died-at-birth_1198143.

Additionally, according to a contemporaneous discussion of the programme at The Chesterfield Forum, http://chesterfieldforum.net/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=2753, Hurt also said during that programme that "he was born in a nursing home 'within the shadow' of the Spire", referred to in the same paragraph as "the Crooked Spire". The Crooked Spire is listed in wikipedia in the entry for Church of St Mary and All Saints, Chesterfield. The forum then has some discussion about what nursing home Hurt could be referring to, but there is no doubt from these posts that, on The One Show, Hurt expressed his belief that he was born in Chesterfield (and not in Shirebrook).

There is no doubt that Hurt then lived in his father's vicarage in Shirebrook, for example see http://www.thisisderbyshire.co.uk/Hollywood-star-returning-roots-play-leading-role-Quad/story-11639347-detail/story.html#axzz2P2oCfAV1 and http://www.peakdistrictonline.co.uk/john-hurt-famous-derbyshire-people-c2518.html.

So technically the correct place of birth is Chesterfield, although I have found no primary sources to confirm this. If anyone can locate a primary source (such as video or a transcript of The One Show), that would be useful.

Most Deaths In Films

Came here after reading a site which list the top ten actor with the most death in movies. John Hurt ranked first with 44 deaths. I don't see it underlined here. Don't know if it's true or not but if it is I think it should be noted; can't confirm it myself so I don't really know either. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 118.137.139.109 (talk) 08:35, 27 April 2013 (UTC)

Doctor Who

Can we find some reliable sources please. Especially to cite claims of him being the 9th Doctor or whatever. Thank you :) -- MisterShiney 19:09, 18 May 2013 (UTC)

Ok, found a Radio Times reference. -- MisterShiney 19:16, 18 May 2013 (UTC)
The notion that he's between 8th and 9th Doctor's hasn't been verified. Would make more sense that he's the Valeyard, from between the Doctor's 12th and 13th regenerations. 98.23.149.187 (talk) 03:48, 12 July 2013 (UTC)

Universe DVD series released in 1999 or in 2006?

This article states John Hurt narrated the Universe DVD series in 1999. "During this time, he narrated a four-part TV series The Universe which was released on DVD in 1999" "Hurt is the narrator of the 4 part series The Universe for Channel 4 International, released in 1999 and available on DVD." I believe this is the series: https://shop.abc.net.au/products/universe-3 which says released in 2006. Can someone please verify and update if necessary? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 124.171.83.27 (talk) 06:35, 22 February 2016 (UTC)

Cause of death

... is a medical pronouncement; this is not included until such a pronouncement is reported.

Also, when a report says someone died "after a battle with" something, this is not synonymous with "died from" something. See WP:SYNTH. —ATS 🖖 talk 03:11, 28 January 2017 (UTC)

Assistance Please!

If anyone has the time and opportunity to help me find sources to cover the filmography and television roles of the article so he could be placed on the Main Page's "Recent death" that would be appreciated thank you! --TDKR Chicago 101 (talk) 03:19, 28 January 2017 (UTC)

Not Irish

He did not have any Irish ancestry, contrary to popular belief. (2A00:23C4:638C:4500:A423:12C7:EAE8:A14 (talk) 10:09, 28 January 2017 (UTC))

I don't think the article claims that he does. Could you point out where we say that? (The only reference to Irish ancestry is the part saying that genealogical research showed no Irish connection). - The Bounder (talk) 10:13, 28 January 2017 (UTC)
He went through his entire life pretending to be Irish, like Peter O'Toole. (2A00:23C4:638C:4500:A423:12C7:EAE8:A14 (talk) 10:19, 28 January 2017 (UTC))
As per my comment above, can you point out where it says he is of Irish descent in the article? We clearly state otherwise. – The Bounder (talk) 10:37, 28 January 2017 (UTC)

Please read the WP:LINKVIO policy and do not add links to copyright-infringing material. There is absolutely no claim we can make to "fair use" in an external links section. Furthermore, please also read WP:BRD and use the talk page to discuss, rather than trying to force a preferred version onto the page. – The Bounder (talk) 09:58, 28 January 2017 (UTC) (moved from my talk page since it's article related) --Light show (talk) 10:03, 28 January 2017 (UTC)

I was going by Fair use. You said that there is no such thing as fair use for external links. However, I couldn't find any guidelines saying that, since there are exceptions. One of the videos was a compilation of film clips which was created by Hurt himself. The other was a compilation produced by WatchMojo.com, a privately held video content producer, publisher, and syndicator, which posts videos for others to use with attribution.
For videos, the guidelines state, In some cases, fair use guidelines may allow them to be used irrespective of any copyright claims. Basically, the videos themselves are not violations, and linking to them is no different than linking to any website. Hope you can clarify. --Light show (talk) 10:15, 28 January 2017 (UTC)
Per Wikipedia:Video links: Linking to online videos can be acceptable if it is demonstrated that the content was posted by the copyright holder or with their permission. --Light show (talk) 10:25, 28 January 2017 (UTC)
You will need to prove that the copyright holders for each and every clip shown have given their permission. Hurt can probably argue fair use, but we cannot. As far as I am aware, these links fail the 'show in context' hurdle, among others. I have asked an editor with a high level of knowledge in this area, Moonriddengirl, to give an opinion on the acceptability of these links. (Although I note from your talk page that you were advised not that long ago not to post YouTube links because they are problematic). – The Bounder (talk) 10:52, 28 January 2017 (UTC)

Timothy Evans

Whatever other controversy may surround Timothy Evans's innocence or otherwise, John Christie certainly was not his landlord at 10 Rillington Place - he was simply a neighbouring tenant. A common mistake but a mistake nonetheless. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 91.125.180.217 (talk) 13:24, 28 January 2017 (UTC)

Date of Death

Since he was at his home England, when did he die on January 27 or 28? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 207.38.189.88 (talk) 03:35, 28 January 2017 (UTC)

He died on January 27, 2017 but this wiki article has him dying on the 25th. It won't let me fix it so someone needs to fix it. :( Fox.C.Hardy (talk) 17:16, 28 January 2017 (UTC)
See the thread below on this point: there is a conflict within the sources, with some saying 25th and some saying 27th. - The Bounder (talk) 17:45, 28 January 2017 (UTC)

Date of death

There seems to be some to-ing and fro-ing over Hurt's date of death, and the sources. Sources don't seem to agree either:

Anyone have any thoughts on how to square the circle? Thanks, The Bounder (talk) 12:39, 28 January 2017 (UTC)

He technically died on the 25th according to his wife, but there are several users on this site changing the date from the 25th to the 27th. The references to the correct date (the 25th) have already been indicated, but people keep editing it back. I wish there was a way to permanently embed his correct date of death (25 January 2017) on the page. Here are some updated references from this morning:

— Preceding unsigned comment added by Birdienicole007 (talkcontribs)

Firstly, please ignore the Daily Mail: it should never be used under any circumstances;
There are several other sources (based on a statement from his agent) that have a different date and location. I don't think we can automatically assign one as being more or less correct than the other, but I expect clarification over the next few days.
There is no rush on trying to jump the sources by deciding ourselves what we think is the "correct" date; we are not a news site trying to compete with the BBC, so a day or so to consider it would be fine. – The Bounder (talk) 15:43, 28 January 2017 (UTC)

appearance

I have often heard people comment that there's "something wrong with his face" and that he makes brilliant use of it to play wounded or sickly characters (Kane in Alien, Winston in 1984) Is this a myth or is there a real medical problem behind this? If the latter I think it deserves mention as an interesting part of his acting skill. CharlesTheBold (talk) 04:28, 25 June 2008 (UTC)

Always seems to me that he just has a very expressive face that naturally lends itself in the directs you suggest. Or maybe it's just typecasting. Either way, I've not heard it being attributed to any type or mobidity. Nick Cooper (talk) 10:54, 25 June 2008 (UTC)
He was rather pale, and this no doubt accounted for some of the perceptions on his appearance. However, I doubt any Reliable Source would go on about that angle.104.169.17.29 (talk) 21:24, 28 January 2017 (UTC)

Early Life/Cinema

The story about him being banned from the cinema must be surely be apocryphal. There has never been a cinema in Woodville - the nearest would have been The Majestic, nearly two miles away in Swadlincote! Picknick99 (talk) 02:22, 29 January 2017 (UTC)

"character actor" or "actor" in the lead

An IP has been trying to change "actor" to the subset "character actor" as the main description of Hurt in the lead. Although there is no doubt that Hurst was a character actor in some of the roles he took, he also took roles that are not described as typical "character actor" roles. While the term should be used and described in some form of "Technique" section, I'm not sure it is justifiable as the sole descriptor of Hurt's work in the lead. All the best, The Bounder (talk) 13:51, 2 February 2017 (UTC)

Agreed. Like Gary Oldman, Hurt plays support but also has notable leads (The Elephant Man, 1984, The Naked Civil Servant/An Englishman in New York, Scandal etc) that disqualify him from being dubbed simply a "character actor". 188.220.161.90 (talk) 17:16, 20 March 2017 (UTC)
