ArtUK has him as born 1870, not 1871. Very little info online. Tacyarg (talk) 08:51, 5 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Is he this chap? "The examiners are the Rev. W. Lucas, M.A., principal of the Hull and East-Riding College ; the Rev. G. Ohlson, 8.A., head master of the Grammar School; and John Menzies, Esq., master of the School of Art". Hull and Eastern Counties Herald - 4 January 1877. Or is that his father? See "A meeting of the Technical Instruction Committee was held last night at the Technical School, Mr Morton presiding ... An application was received from Mr John Menzies, jun., of the Hull School of Art, for the position of assistant art teacher. —The Secretary said the applicant had the highest qualifications, and was well recommended. Mr Menzies was the only applicant, and received the appointment". Hull Daily Mail - 23 January 1895. Tacyarg (talk) 09:17, 5 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
And again. The Scotsman - 01 February 1939 "THE LATE JOSEPH SIMPSON Edinburgh Memories. The late Joseph Simpson, the well-known artist and designer (writes a correspondent) was prominent in 'an interesting coterie of young artists in the early stage of his career. ... A number of young artists of about the same time used to meet in Simpson's studio in Castle Street. By and by they formed themselves into a club for sketching, as well as 'for discussion and social recreation. ... The company included the late S. J. Peploe, R.S.A.; the late Mr Rbt. Hope, R.S.A; Mr J. D. Ferguson (now resident in Paris where his work is well known); Mr Cruickshanks; the Hon. Morton Stuart (afterwards the Earl of Moray), Mr John Menzies, and Mr Ritchie. This band of zealous young artists formed a notable and interesting group." Tacyarg (talk) 10:05, 5 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
