Scrooge[edit]

In this article in the Cleveland weekly newspaper Free Times ("Before the Court of Wikipedia. Why the People's Encyclopedia Ain't All It's Cracked Up To Be"), Erin O'Brien (sister of John O'Brien) writes about the deletion of the article about herself and then:

Let's move on to accuracy. [...] John's article asserts, "He also had a cameo in the 1970 film Scrooge." In 1970, John was 10 and I was 5. We lived in Brecksville and all we knew of the movies was that someone named James Bond had a bevy of tiny girlfriends that danced on gun barrels and swam in martini glasses. No cameos, no movies, no Scrooge. I know. I was there.

This information was added on 9 December 2005 by an anonymous user, who might have taken it from the IMDb entry about John O'Brien.

For the moment, I have removed it. IMDb is a renowned and widely used resource, but errors in IMDb entries do happen and a second source should be cited before adding this back into the article.

Erin O'Brien goes on:

I tried to edit out the erroneous statements on both sites [i.e. in this article and in John O'Brien (novelist)], but some Kiss-the-Hem-of-my-Purple-Robe Wikipedian Lord apparently usurped my efforts.

However, I can't find any such edits in this article. Her account has made no article edits. Maybe not all the information found in Free Times articles is accurate ;)

Hello, Erin O'Brien here. Thanks for this notation. Regarding my editing attempts, I tried to do them before I had the account. I added all the stuff about John's birthplace and childhood.

You are referring to these edits from June 2005? Thanks, you certainly did a lot for the article. However, as far as I can see all the information that you provided is still contained in the article, the Scrooge statement was added much later, and the edit history doesn't show any attempts to remove it. Apparently, my editing attempts were not done very well. Just today, I thought I'd saved something, but it did not show up after I checked it. If you'd really like to right a wrong, go to my deletion discussion pages. Therein you will see that the Cleveland East Side Writer's site was deleted. It is erroneously stated that the group has no "genuine publishing credentials." Our members are dripping in publications and awards. For starters, we count among us Maureen McHugh, Steven Hayward and Sarah Willis, all of whom grace these hallowed pages. As for the comments about the Rolex and "Scrooge," they were 100% false and should not be put back into this article for any reason.72.196.133.209 21:02, 16 January 2007 (UTC)Erin O'Brien[reply]
